Softball celebrates a Wet Senior Day; Swept by No. 3 Texas Lutheran

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team dropped the final two contests Saturday, to give No. 3 Texas Lutheran a four-game sweep. Dallas ended up no-hit in a five-inning, 11-0, setback in the opener. The latter contest resulted in a 6-0 final. Rain occasionally fell throughout the middle of the afternoon but no in-game delays occurred. The tarp was placed on the field between contests, and a 45-minute break ensued as a quick storm passed through. 

Following the second game, Erin Begle (Houston, Texas), Bailey DiStefano (Bryan, Texas), and Ciara Stewart (Crockett, Texas) were recognized as part of "Senior Day."


GAME ONE INFORMATION

Pitcher Records: W) Grissom (13-0), L) Lee (12-11)

Junior Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.) reached on a throwing error by Texas Lutheran pitcher Taylor Grissom. That was the only damage the Lady Crusaders did as Grissom retired the next 15 batters in a row of a five-inning no-hitter.

The top-10 ranked opponent struck for two runs at the start of the game as Taylor Yancey singled up the middle for a two-RBI single. Grace Estes and Megan Armistead led off the contest with consecutive hits and Jennifer Gallagher advanced both to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

Texas Lutheran expanded the lead with eight runs in the third and capped the scoring with one in the fourth.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Both teams committed one error.

- Junior Katie Lee pitched five innings in her third appearance of the series. She allowed nine earned runs on 15 hits and walked two.

- TLU posted 15 hits for the second straight game.

- Armistead was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Yancey led with three RBI.

- Grissom threw a no-no in five innings and struck out five.


GAME TWO INFORMATION

Pitcher Records: W) Pizana (8-1), L) Parks (4-7)

The second game was the first of the series to go seven innings. It was a low-scoring battle until the Bulldogs pulled away with four runs in their final at-bat.

Junior Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fl.) got UD in the hit column in the first inning with a one-out single through the left side of the infield. Freshman Roma Thornton (Wharton, Texas), who reached on an error the previous play, swiped third base along with Tesauro in a double steal with Begle batting. The clean-up hitter rolled a grounder to third and Thornton was out at home on the play. Another groundout ended the lone inning the Navy and White had a runner at third.

Texas Lutheran broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning. Gallagher led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Nicole Snow drove her in two batters later with a two-out single to right. Gallagher notched an RBI to double the advantage in the fifth.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

-Dallas collected four hits in the setback.

- Finch, Tesauro, and freshmen Melanie Savala (Bryan, Texas) and Keali Weatherford (Humble, Texas) all had singles.

- The double steal was the lone two for a Lady Crusaders as they now boast 105 this year.

- Freshman Tera Espinosa (Caldwell, Texas) had two sacrifices.

- Freshman Page Parks (Cedar Parks, Texas) took the loss with a complete seven-inning outing. She allowed six runs (3 earned) on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

- Snow was perfect with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. She and Gallagher doubled. Heather Hummel hit her second home run of the series.

- Veny Pizana went the distance in the shutout. She struck out eight and walked a pair.

UP NEXT

Dallas wraps up the home slate of its schedule on April 13 versus LeTourneau University. This doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. and takes place for the rescheduled contests on March 30 due to weather.
