Softball gains split with Trinity after Big innings engineer Comebacks on Monday Sweep

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team snapped a seven-game slide by topping Trinity University in game one of a doubleheader, 8-6. That victory marked the 200th in the program's history. Dallas bettered that mark by one with a 3-1 final in the nightcap to secure a series split.


GAME ONE INFORMATION

After being held to a pair of hits through three innings, the Lady Crusaders doubled that total and cut a 2-0 deficit in half as freshman Samantha Laberge (Round rock, Texas) singled to right and drove in classmate Stephanie Cervantes (Temecula, Calif.).

The big frame for UD came in the fifth, when the home squad sent 11 batters to the plate. The Lady Crusaders tattooed Trinity for seven runs on seven hits. Junior Avery Finch started the frame by reaching on an error by the second baseman. After the team-leading base stealing took second and third on thefts, she scored on an RBI hit from freshman Melanie Savala (Bryan, Texas).

With the scoreboard knotted, junior Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fl.) smashed her first home run of the season to lift UD up for good in the game (4-2). Also racking up ribbies for Dallas in the fifth were junior Alexandria Compte (Houston, Texas), Laberge with two, and junior Allison Kotlar (Edna, Texas).

Trinity did not go quietly with six outs to go and an 8-2 deficit. The Tigers got a run back in the sixth and produced three in their final trip to the plate. Marisa Trevino began the comeback attempt with a double to left field. After three batters went by, Mackenzie Hill singled up the middle to drive in two. An infield single by Hilary Hoffman cut the gap to 8-6 and runners were at the corners with Rebecca Berreth representing the go-ahead run.

UD pitcher, freshman Paige Parks (Cedar Parks, Texas) stayed composed and got a fly out secured by a charging Finch to end the tough skid.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Dallas etched 14 hits. Cervantes led with a 3-for-4 and two runs scored. Finch, Tesauro, and Laberge formed a trio with multiple hits.

- Eight starters for the Lady Crusaders had at least one base knock.

- Doubles for UD: Cervantes (2).

- Triples for UD: Tesauro (2), Laberge (1). Home runs for UD: Tesauro (1)

- Laberge led UD with game-high three RBI. Tesauro drove in two on the blast.

- Finch with a season-most three stolen bases.

- Parks went 6.2 innings in relief. She got the win after allowing four runs (3 earned) on 13 hits. Walked two and struckout one.

- Trinity accumulated 15 hits. Stephanie Crumrine went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

- Hoffman, Berreth, and McCarty (hitters 2-4) completed the multi-hit performers for the guests. Berreth and Trevino notched the doubles.

- The Tigers left 12 on base in the contest.

- Delphina Morales was saddled with the loss in 4.1 innings as the starter. She surrendered seven runs (6 earned) on nine hits. She walked two and struck out six.

A pitcher's duel through five innings appeared to shift in favor of Trinity after the Maroon and Gold captured a 1-0 edge in the top of the sixth. However, the Lady Crusaders caught fire in a single-inning for the second game of the night. They walloped three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning.

An error got freshman Roma Thornton (Wharton, Texas) to second base to start things off. After a single by Kotlar, Finch drove the duo in with a single to center field. Both runners came in from scoring position.

Two batters later, Tesauro doubled to left center and Finch raced in to mark what would be the eventual final tally on the board, 3-1. The Tigers got a runner to third in the seventh, but would not threaten further.

TU had broken the scoreless batter in the fifth as Berreth doubled off the wall in left center to start the inning. A two-out single by Trevino put the first run on the board.

Through four innings, the Tigers' starter, Kaci Wellik had a perfect game going. Senior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas) spoiled that and the no-no with a double that just missed going out in left center in the bottom of the fifth.

- Junior Katie Lee (Houston, Texas) went the distance and had a run allowed on seven hits. She walked two and struck out two.

- Trinity was led by Berreth with a 2-for-3 night. Emily Fleischman, Hailey Wilson, Wellik, Trevino, and Hill had hits.

- Wellik tossed six innings and other than the final one had retired 15-of-16 UD hitters. She also fanned seven during that span.
