Season-high 10 runs not Enough; Huntingdon walks-off as Softball goes 0-2 Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Dallas softball team went 0-2 on Saturday at Millsaps College. After falling 5-2 in game one versus Millsaps, the Lady Crusaders would tally a season-high 10 runs, but allowed Huntingdon College to walk-off with an 11-10 victory on the neutral site.

GAME ONE INFORMATION

Pitching decisions: W) Faucheux (1-1), L) Lee (0-2)

Millsaps would get on the board early with a four-run first inning. With the first three batters reaching for the Majors, Rayne Gravat singled to left with an RBI to break the scoreless tie. Katelyn Murray would be the second hit by pitch batter in the frame, and forced Kathryn Romero to score as all runners advanced in the bases loaded situation. Rayner LeBlanc picked up the third hit of the inning with an RBI single to center, and Kaitlyn Casias lifted a sacrifice fly to center to round out the crooked number inning.

The Lady Crusaders went through the first 10 hitters in the lineup before freshman Melanie Savala (Bryan, Texas) punched a double to left center and ended the perfect game bid for Millsaps.

After another run was tacked on by the home team, Dallas avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the seventh. Freshman Katie Antigua (Elk Grove, Calif.) smacked a two-run homer for the team's first of the campaign.

- Dallas had three hits altogether in the contest. Junior Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.) added a single behind the one's mentioned above from Savala and Antigua.

- Antigua's first collegiate homer drove in senior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas).

- Finch picked up her 50th career stolen base.

- Junior Katie Lee (Houston, Texas) went six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. She walked one and struck out two.

- Millsaps was led by Kathryn Romero and Rayne Gravat with 2-for-3 games and a run scored. Romero, Gravat, LeBlanc, and Casias accounted for all runs-batted-in the game.

- Missy Romero swiped a stolen base.

- Danielle Faucheux went the distance and allowed two runs on three hits. She fanned nine batters.

GAME TWO INFORMATION

Pitching decisions: W) Reed (1-1), L) Parks (1-1)

In the second matchup, Dallas would be the team to post a high scoring inning, with a season-most eight runs in a single frame. Finch and Savala led off with walks and junior Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fl.) slapped one of three hits in the inning through the left side to load the bases. Begle was hit by a pitch to give UD the first run, and then Antigua hit a sacrifice fly to double the advantage.

After an error led to the third run for the Lady Crusaders, junior Allison Kotlar smacked a two-RBI single to left field. Another error and then a pass ball would increase the Navy and White's edge to seven runs, before Savala wacked her second double of the twinbill and first hit in her second plate appearance that inning to plate Finch. Overall, Dallas sent 11 batters to the plate in the first.

Huntingdon got two runs back in the third inning.

Finch utilized a bunt single to advance freshman Keali Weatherford (Humble, Texas) to third base. The second baseman would hustle home as Finch beat out the throw at first. The speedy tandem gave the Lady Crusaders their ninth run.

The Hawks caught fire in the bottom of the sixth, and rallied with seven runs on five hits to nip the deficit and tie the game 9-all. Four of the last five batters reached on singles for HC, but freshman Roma Thornton (Wharton, Texas) got an outfield assist to end the damage on the same play the game-tying run scored.

Dallas got back on top in the seventh with freshman Samantha Bratsch (The Woodlands, Texas) reaching on an errant throw by the catcher in an effort to complete a throw out at first on a dropped third strike.

It was the home team of the game that prevailed though, as Huntingdon brought two runners around on an error by the UD short stop.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Tesauro gave a 2-for-3 effort with the lone multi-hit contest for Dallas. Weatherford would score twice and Kotlar had the only multiple RBI day.

- Only five of the Lady Crusaders' 10 runs were credited as runs-batted-in.

- There were five errors for Dallas.

- Savala and Tesauro each had a double to account for the extra base knocks.

- Weatherford swiped two steals and Finch added one to give her four in the past three games.

- Freshman Paige Parks (Cedar Parks, Texas) got the start in the circle. She completed 5.2 innings with four runs (one earned) allowed on eight hits. She walked six and matched a season-high three strikeouts.

- Parks would go the first five innings before being lifted in the sixth. She re-entered with one out in the frame and would finish the game.

- The Hawks were led in the hit column by Kerri Reed with a 3-for-4 afternoon. Daisha Henderson and Reed each scored three times. Jamie Langford joined the duo to round out the three hitters with multiple ones in the game.

- Blake Rowland and Jessica Swindle added a pair of RBIs each.

- Reed got the win in the circle pitching six innings of relief. She allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. She matched five walks with as many strikeouts.

Dallas will play both opponents tomorrow in the same order, with Millsaps at 10 a.m. and Huntingdon around 12 p.m. Live coverage will not be available for the games.
