Offense carries Dallas to sweep on Friday over Schreiner

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team (18-14, 11-9 SCAC) swept a doubleheader on Friday night versus Schreiner University (5-27, 4-14 SCAC) with two big performances from the offense. Dallas completed a five-inning, 8-0 victory in the series-opener, before edging the Mountaineers 10-7 in the nightcap.

UD totaled at least a run in all four innings the team came to the dish of the first tilt. A three-run first catapulted the home squad ahead in the shutout, with junior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas) driving in two of her season-high, four RBI.

The shortstop clobbered another knock through the right side in the fourth inning to complete a three-run fourth.

It was a team effort for the Lady Crusaders, who had seven players in the starting lineup record at least one of eight hits in the route. Behind Begle's multi-hit effort were: freshman Madison Goforth (Tyler, Texas), Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fla.), seniors Taylor Garcia (Pflugerville, Texas) and Ashley Pickert (Lenexa, Kan.), and sophomores Ciara Stewart (Crockett, Texas) and Allison Kotlar (Edna, Texas).

Tesauro smacked her third triple of the campaign, and second in the last three games. The right fielder also stole a base, along with Goforth.

Sophomore Katie Lee (Houston, Texas) went five innings and allowed four hits as she blanked an opponent for the sixth time this year. The right-hander walked one and struck out two.

Dominique Sandoval (2-5) was tagged with the loss as she allowed eight runs (five earned) on three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Game two began a familiar fashion as the Navy and White posted three runs and five hits through a pair of frames. Dallas rocked a team-most, 18 hits on the season and would utilize them to help score its third double figure output of the spring.

Schreiner pounced in the fourth inning, boasting five runs to nip the deficit to a single run. A double to right center by Kelsey Schwind cleared the bases that were loaded to help spark the crooked number frame.

UD escaped the jam and would add a pair of runs in the home half to push a three-run advantage. Another run in the sixth and seventh would provide enough insurance as the Mountaineers rallied for two in their final at bat.

Highlighting the big hit parade were Garcia and Pickert with three apiece. Sophomore Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.), freshman Eliah Davila (Abilene, Texas), Tesauro, and Begle all chipped in multi-hit performances.

Five doubles for the Lady Crusaders matched a season-high, as Begle pounded two and Goforth, Tesauro, and Garcia all hit one in that category.

Garcia increased her career-high in RBI totals to 36, including a pair in the latter triumph. The heart of the Dallas batting order garnered most of the run production as Tesauro, Garcia, and Begle notched a pair each.

Tesauro and Garcia scored a game-high three times, and Finch stole two of UD's four bases on the night. Tesauro and Pickert rounded out the other swipes in the quartet.

Samantha Cordon led Schreiner with three hits in four trips to the plate. Daneece Stewart, Lorena Espinoza, and Nichole Schoenherr all added two base knocks apiece to contribute to the visitor's 12 hits.

Cordon produced two doubles, while Espinoza and Schwind added one to complete SU's extra base hits.

In the circle, Lee (17-11) nabbed two more wins to extend the single-season record for the softball program. In the second game, the Houston, Texas, native hurled seven frames and gave up seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits and two walks.

Espinoza (1-17) went six and surrendered 10 runs on 18 hits to go with a walk and a punch out.
