Softball unable to Blemish Texas Lutheran in Conference double dip

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team (16-11, 9-6 SCAC) were unable to blemish Texas Lutheran University's (23-4, 13-0 SCAC) conference record on Friday evening. Dallas was topped 6-2 in the opener, and would be blanked 10-0 through five innings in the second contest.

TLU has won 21-straight and maintains its top spot in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The Lady Crusaders have lost twice in a row to the same opponent since Millsaps College swept a twinbill on Feb. 21.

The first three hitters for the visitors reached base via a hit as sophomore Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.) and freshman Madison Goforth (Tyler, Texas) set the table with a bunt single and base knock through the left side.

Sophomore Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fla.) sliced a two-RBI single to the opposite field from the right side of the batters' box to plate the duo and lift Dallas to a 2-0 edge.

The Bulldogs quickly erased the deficit and regained the advantage for the remainder of the way on a trio of runs in their first trip to the plate. A single run in the second and two-run fourth concluded the scoring for the home squad.

UD would be outhit 6-4 in the entire game, and committed three errors to the Black and Gold's lone miscue. The top three batters in the Lady Crusaders' lineup that sparked the first inning parade of knocks also each stole a base. Adding to the league lead of 82 after both games were Finch, Goforth, and Tesauro.

Second in the SCAC in steals coming into the day was Texas Lutheran, and that margin was nipped as the team managed six in the first affair. Amassing half of those was Ashley Jacobsen. Jacobsen and Jaquelyn Brown notched multi-hit outings for TLU's offense. Taylor Yancey blasted her one hit for a two-run shot that proved to be the game-winner in the first frame.

Taylor Grissom (11-0) earned the victory with the start. She tossed six innings and allowed both runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.

In Game two, Dallas couldn't halt a steady Bulldogs' momentum that scored in the first four innings to bolster a double-digit margin. It's the second time the Navy and White have been shut out on the campaign.

TLU got on the board in the first inning and would catapult its edge with four in the second, three in the third, and a pair in the fourth. The home team tallied 11 hits; led by Brown with a game-high three to match her RBI count. Nicole Snow and Jacobsen rounded out the multiple hit performers with two apiece. Jacobsen drove in two and Snow wacked the lone extra base knock for Texas Lutheran with a two-bagger.

Only three singles got logged for the road team, as seniors Taylor Garcia (Plugerville, Texas) and Ashley Pickert (Lenexa, Kan.), and sophomore Allison Kotlar (Edna, Texas) claimed those.

Sophomore Katie Lee (Houston, Texas) moved to 15-9 on the year with setbacks in both starts. She was charged with a combined 16 runs (14 earned) on 17 hits, five walks, and four strikeouts.
