Softball sweeps Sul Ross State

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team (3-3) won back-to-back contests for the first time this season, as it swept Sul Ross State University (0-5) on Sunday afternoon. Dallas also broke in with its first victory at the home confines as they continue a six-game stretch at Crusader Field.

Game one of the doubleheader favored UD 5-2, and then prevailed in a high scoring affair in the second game 8-5.

RECAP OF FIRST GAME

Dallas was got on the scoreboard early in the first inning as the home squad took advantage of a pair of walks that plated sophomore Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fla.) for a 1-0 lead. The outfielder would connect on the Lady Crusaders' first hit of the contest in the bottom of the third.

Each team tallied five hits apiece in the first matchup of the twinbill. The Navy and White would be ahead 2-0 after three, and then extended things with a trio of runs in the fifth.

Sophomores Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.) and Ciara Stewart (Crockett, Texas), freshman Madison Goforth (Tyler, Texas), and senior Taylor Garcia (Plugerville, Texas) all collected base knocks in the frame.

Garcia had a two-RBI double laced into left field to increase UD's edge 4-0. The next batter, Stewart, continued to add on with a sharply placed single on the left side of the diamond to bring around pinch runner Taylor Ray (Cypress, Texas).

Junior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas) scored twice in the victory.

Sul Ross State responded in the top of the 6th with two runs, but would leave the bases loaded to as sophomore Katie Lee (Houston, Texas) kept her composure to earn the win.

The right-hander (2-1) hurled a complete game with two runs allowed, five hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.

Saddled with the loss was Jackie Gonzalez for SRSU, compiling five runs allowed, five hits given up, five walks, and four punchouts.

Shelby Doederlein notched the lone multi-hit performance of the affair with a two-for-three day.

RECAP OF SECOND GAME

The latter contest featured the Lady Crusaders pounding a season-high 16 hits and boasting a team-most eight runs in the triumph.

Dallas got the offense rolling quickly in the first two innings, with three runs being etched on the scoreboard for each, respective frame. The Navy and White had already garnered 10 hits through the first six outs, which marked four away form a season-high as a team entering the day.

The Lobos never faded as Darrian Doederlein earned a two-base knock for the first baserunner of the game. A two-out rally continued as SRSU cut the deficit in half with three players crossing the dish.

It became a 6-5 affair after the Red and White chipped away for a pair of runs that matched hits in the fourth innings. The Lobos built their second-straight, two-out rally inning.

UD countered with a run in the bottom half as freshman Christina Torre (Novato, Calif.) scored Tesauro on a single to left center.

Tesauro was the big name in the box for this game, driving in a career-high four Lady Crusaders off two hits. The native of Hollywood, Florida, was one of six players to tally multi-hit results, and part of a quintet with a pair.

Goforth delivered her second three-hit contest and fourth multiple hit game of the young campaign. Behind the rookies game-high included: sophomore Allison Kotlar (Edna, Texas), Finch, Begle, Tesauro, and Garcia.

Every starter in the Dallas lineup smacked at least one base knock to help complete the sweep.

Freshman Elizabeth Symanski (Wilmington, Vt.) garnered her first collegiate win in the circle. She threw four innings while giving up five runs (three earned), off six hits. She also walked two and struck out one.

Lee returned the final three frames to lockdown the first save individually and for the team. The Houston, Texas, native worked around three hits and fanned four.

The Lobos' Dominique Lopez was touched for 15 hits and allowed all eight runs in 4.2 innings. She walked two and recorded one strikeout.
