Softball earns split on Opening Day

LONGVIEW, TEXAS - The University of Dallas softball team (1-1) was able to split Saturday's afternoon doubleheader at LeTourneau University (3-1). Game one went in favor of the Lady Crusaders with a 7-0 shutout, before falling 5-3 in the latter contest of the twinbill.

In the first contest, UD pounded seven runs to start opening day on a strong offensive note, and produced 14 hits compared to four knocked by its opponent.

Leading the hit parade for the road team were junior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas) and senior Ashley Pickert (Lenexa, Kan.) with three apiece. The middle infielder tandem also matched totals in runs and RBI a one and two, respectively.

A trio of Lady Crusaders notched multi-hit games with a pair of knocks from sophomores Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.), Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fla.), and Allison Kotlar (Edna, Texas).

It was a tightly contest game with Dallas scratching a run in the first and second inning. After an insurance run was added in the fifth and sixth, the Navy and White opened the gates with a three-run seventh.

UD swiped five bases in the affair, with Finch posting two.

Sophomore Katie Lee (1-0) hurled a seven inning shutout while scattering four hits to match how many strikeouts she compiled.

In game two, both squads garnered seven hits, but the Lady Crusaders were unable to rally back in their first setback.

LETU got on the board first with a run in the first and second inning. Dallas erased the narrow margin with a two-run third off a double from sophomore Ciara Stewart (Crockett, Texas).

The YellowJackets regained the edge in the bottom of the 4th and would counter UD's fifth inning run with one in the bottom half for the home team.

Freshman Madison Goforth (Tyler, Texas) tallied a two-hit performance to lead the Dallas offense in hits. Tesauro added the other RBI with the other double and extra base hit for the Lady Crusaders.
