Softball stumbles against Sul Ross State University, drops four road games to the Lobos

ALPINE, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team (8-26) traveled to Alpine, Texas, to play a four game series with Sul Ross State University over the weekend. On Saturday, the Lady Crusaders were on the short end of things, losing to the Lobos in Game 1, 14-4, while dropping Game 2 as well, 12-8.

Dallas had a shot at retribution in Sunday's doubleheader, but again couldn't solve Sul Ross, falling in Game 1, 7-4, before suffering a 15-7 defeat in Game 2 to conclude the series.

Saturday, Apr. 16:

Game 1: Dallas 4, Sul Ross State University 14 (F/5) Boxscore

The first of four games on the weekend for UD started roughly, with a ten run loss to the Lobos. Junior pitcher Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, Minn./Convent of the Visitation School) started the game for the Lady Crusaders, allowing three hits in one inning. Senior right-handed pitcher Cheryl Hinze (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.) was effective in relief, giving up one earned run and striking out one batter.

Offensively, UD totaled six hits against the Lobos. Two of those hits were for extra bases, a double by sophomore Christina Jeffrey (Tomball, Texas/Concordia Lutheran) and a triple by sophomore Brittany Castro (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.). Jeffrey also knocked in UD's sole run of the game.

Game 2: Dallas 8, Sul Ross State University 12 (F/7) Boxscore

In game two of the doubleheader, UD was able to rack up eight runs on fourteen hits, but it was still not enough to get the W. Jeffrey led the ladies with two RBIs on four hits, two being triples. Mollner went 3-for-5 in the game, knocking in one RBI on a double in the fifth inning.

Mollner also displayed her arm on the mound, pitching five innings. She gave up four earned runs on 10 hits, and was also able to strikeout three Lobos.

Sunday, Apr. 17:

Game 1: Dallas 4, Sul Ross State University 7 (F/7) Boxscore

Mollner was able to pitch all six innings in the third game of the four game series against the Lobos, hurling three strikeouts and allowing seven runs.

Offensively, the Crusaders totaled seven hits and four runs. Mollner, Hinze and Castro all tied with two hits each to lead the team. However, none of the hits or runs were enough to notch the win.

Game 2: Dallas 7, Sul Ross State University 15 (F/5) Boxscore

In the final game of the series, the Lady Crusader looked to head home on a positive note. However, the Lobos were able to get the necessary hits to sweep Dallas.

Nevertheless, UD was still able to score seven runs and total ten hits. Freshman Mallori Westbrook (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron H.S.) led the ladies with three RBIs on two hits, with one being a two-run homerun in the third inning.

On the mound, Mollner and Hinze combined for eleven earned runs in four innings pitched. Overall, the ladies put forth a good effort this weekend, but were unable to capitalize against Sul Ross.

The Lady Crusaders look to rebound against LeTourneau University on Thursday, Apr. 28, as Dallas' doubleheader bout with the YellowJackets will conclude the 2011 season. First pitch in Longview, Texas, is set for 1:00 p.m.
