Softball on wrong side of doubleheader versus LeTourneau University, falls to YellowJackets in both games on 'Senior Night'

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team (8-22) celebrated 'Senior Night' on Wednesday, recognizing Meghan Frost (Bandera, Texas/Northshore H.S.), Cheryl Hinze (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.) and Theresa Smart (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S.) for their contributions to the team.

The celebration was bittersweet, however, as Dallas fell to visiting LeTourneau University in both games of the doubleheader, dropping Game 1, 10-1, and Game 2, 12-2, to the pesky YellowJackets.

Game 1: Dallas 1, LeTourneau University 10 (F/7) Boxscore

The right-handed pitching Hinze started on the mound for Dallas. After LeTourneau recorded four runs (one earned) on three hits, a walk and a couple errors in the first two innings, junior Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, Minn./Convent of the Visitation School) came in from center field to pitch in relief of Hinze for the remainder of the game.

Things didn't go much better for Mollner, as the YellowJackets tagged the junior for six runs (three earned) in five innings of work.

Both of Hinze and Mollner tried helping their own cause on the offensive side of the ball, as each recorded a team-leading two hits in Game 1, while Mollner scored Dallas' lone run in the 3rd inning after tripling -- Hinze brought her in for the RBI on a single.

Of note, Meredith Noe (Sugar Land, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) and Mallori Westbrook (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron H.S.) accounted for the Lady Crusaders' other two hits in the Game 1, 10-1, loss.

Game 2: Dallas 2, LeTourneau University 12 (F/6) Boxscore

Mollner received the starting nod from head coach Amber Conner in Game 2, and in six-innings pitched, allowed 12 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits and four walks, while striking-out one.

LeTourneau University opened the scoring in the 1st inning, as two YellowJackets crossed home plate in front of Frost, the catcher. Dallas countered with a score of their own in the bottom-half of the inning, when Christina Jeffrey (Tomball, Texas/Concordia Lutheran) singled to bring in Mollner from third base, whom initially earned a walk. Jeffrey led Dallas in hitting for Game 2, amassing two hits.

Jeffrey came through again, this time in the 5th inning, pushing across the Lady Crusaders' second run of the game. Noe scored on the play after initially walking, moving to second on a sac-bunt by Mollner, and then advancing to third base on a Hinze groundout to second base.

This proved to be the last of the Lady Crusader scoring, however, as the team wrapped up their final home game of the 2011 season with a 12-2 six-inning defeat to the YellowJackets.

Next opponent

Dallas will have another crack at squashing the YellowJackets on Tuesday, April 26, in Longview, Texas, but first the team travels to Alpine, Texas, where they'll battle Sul Ross State University in a four game weekend series. The first of the two doubleheaders will be played on Saturday, April 16, at 3:00 p.m.
