Softball drops both games of doubleheader to Trinity University behind great pitching from the Tigers

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team (4-16) faced stiff competition on Saturday afternoon at Crusader Field in the form of Trinity University. The Lady Crusaders had trouble combating the outstanding pitching efforts of Colbie Devost, as the sophomore hurler notches the 12-0 'perfect game' victory in Game 1, and the 11-3 win in relief in Game 2.

Game 1: Dallas 0, Trinity University 12 (F/5) Boxscore

Devost was straight 'dealing' in the initial game of the doubleheader, as she achieved 'perfection' on the mound for the Tigers in five innings of work.

Though the Lady Crusaders' bats were cold, the team made some nice plays defensively. Freshman first baseman Mallori Westbrook (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron H.S.) led Dallas with eight putouts and junior pitcher Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, Minn./Convent of the Visitation School) led in assists with four.

Game 2: Dallas 3, Trinity University 11 (F/6) Boxscore

Eager to put Game 1 behind them, Dallas struck in the 1st inning of Game 2, as Mollner -- the lead-off hitter -- singled before reaching third base on two stolen bases. She would then score on an error by the shortstop, giving the Lady Crusaders an early 1-0 advantage. Mollner totaled three stolen bases for the game, and went 2-for-2 at the plate in addition to notching a walk.

Another notable offensive performer for Dallas was sophomore catcher Christina Jeffrey (Tomball, Texas/Concordia Lutheran), who went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the 3rd inning.

Though the Tigers got to Mollner for 11 runs (seven earned), she was able to strike out six batters. Her counterpart Devost, picked up her second win of the day after entering the game in relief of starting pitcher Sydney Friday.

Next game:

Dallas looks to return to the win column on Saturday, March 26, as the team travels to Georgetown, Texas, where they'll battle Southwestern University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
