Softball notches first win of season, knocks off MacMurray College (Ill.) before falling to the Highlanders in Game 2

CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Dallas softball team (1-11) notched their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating MacMurray College (Ill.) in Game 1 of their two games on the day, 7-6, before dropping Game 2 to the Highlanders, 12-2.

Game 1: Dallas 7, MacMurray College 6 Boxscore

Down 6-1 in the in the 6th inning, Lady Crusaders rally, scoring three runs in the 6th before leveling the score in the 7th inning, 6-6.

An extra inning (8th) was needed to decide the tightly contested game with the Highlanders. Dallas' starting pitcher Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, Minn./Convent of the Visitation School), whom went the distance, shut down MacMurray in the top-half of the 8th inning, allowing just one walk for no consequence.

Then, the Lady Crusaders took over. With rules dictating a runner start at second base in extra innings, Meghan Frost (Bandera, Texas/Northshore H.S.) laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Mallori Westbrook (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron H.S.) to third base.

After Meredith Noe  (Sugar Land, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) reached second base on an error by the third baseman followed by an ill-advised throw by the pitcher, it was Maggie Boylan's (San Marcos, Texas/San Marcos Baptist Academy) chance to play hero for Dallas. Boylan delivered in a big way, singling to the pitcher, bringing in Westbrook for the game-winning RBI. The score ended the Lady Crusaders' 10 game losing streak, and gave them their first victory of the season.

Game 2: Dallas 2, MacMurray College 12 Boxscore

Dallas wasn't as fortunate against MacMurray in Sunday's Game 2 of the Warrior Spring Fling. The Lady Crusaders jumped out to the early lead, knocking in two runs in the first inning, after holding the Highlanders scoreless.

MacMurray's bats then woke up, as Dallas' foe got to Cheryl Hinze (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.) for seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings of work. Hinze was replaced by Mollner in the 5th inning, but the junior wasn't able to deliver either against the Highlanders, who finished off the game with a five spot.

Noe knocked in Dallas' lone RBI, in the 1st inning, off a single to the pitcher, which scored Christina Jeffrey (Tomball, Texas/Concordia Lutheran). Hinze, Yokell, and Mollner accounted for the Lady Crusader's other hits on the game.
