Softball bested by No. 19 Washington University (Mo.) and Hendrix College (Ark.) on Day 1 of Warrior Spring Fling

CONWAY, Ark. - Saturday marked the first day of the Hendrix College Warrior Spring Fling softball tournament, in which the University of Dallas softball team (0-10) was downed by No. 19 Washington University (Mo.), 21-6, in addition to suffering a 19-2 loss to host team Hendrix College (Ark.).

Game 1: Dallas 6, Washington University (Mo.) 21 Boxscore

Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, Minn./Convent of the Visitation School) got the start against Washington University, in Dallas' opening game of the Warrior Sping Fling. Mollner, a junior, had a tough three innings of work, allowing 19 runs (14 earned) on 15 hits, while walking six batters and striking-out one. In the 4th inning, Mollner was replaced by Cheryl Hinze (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.) on the mound, and remained in the game as center fielder. Hinze allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk, before the game was called after the 5th inning. With Hinze on the mound, Dallas outscored Washington University, 3-2.

The Lady Crusaders struggled overcoming a nine run 1st inning and a six run 2nd inning, but were able to score in every inning except for the 4th. Offensively, Mollner led the way for Dallas, scoring two runs on two hits. Brittany Castro (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.) and Mallori Westbrook (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron H.S.) each recorded a double for Dallas.

Game 2: Dallas 2, Hendrix College (Ark.) 19 Boxscore

In the second game of the Warrior Spring Fling, Hinze started on the mound for the Lady Crusaders. She was hit with the loss, after giving up 10 runs (six earned) on seven hits to the Warriors. Hinze also gave up three walks and struckout one batter.

Hinze helped her own cause in the Lady Crusaders' 1st inning, doubling to left center. She touched homeplate when Castro knocked her in, on a double of her own into the left-field gap. Dallas' lead was short-lived, however, as Hendrix countered with a four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Mollner took over for Hinze after 1 2/3 innings, and allowed nine runs on nine hits, while striking-out two and walking five batters.

Hinze scored Dallas' final run (unearned), in the top-half of the 3rd inning, on a throwing error by Hendrix's catcher, which was intended to catch Castro in the act of stealing second base.

In the 4th inning, the Warriors tacked on seven runs, putting the game out of reach for Dallas.
