UD Rallies, Comes Up Short Against Southwestern in Doubleheader

The University of Dallas Crusaders lost both ends of a doubleheader to Southwestern University Sunday afternoon, by scores of 7-1 and 7-5. The second game provided plenty of drama, however, as the Crusaders rallied only to lose in extra innings.

In the opening game, Southwestern University got out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back, winning the game 7-1. All of the offense for UD was provided by freshman infielder Brittany Castro (Houston, TX/Langham Creek H.S) who hit a home run in the bottom half of the first inning. Senior Whitney Thomas (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic) was victimized by errors on the mound, giving up 3 unearned runs in her 1 2/3 innings pitched. Sophomore Liana Revels (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.) did an admirable job relieving Thomas, allowing only 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits over the final five and a third innings.

The second game looked to be a replay of the first, as the Pirates jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, thanks in large part to errors. However, Dallas clawed their way back with 2 runs in the fifth and 1 in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. UD wasted a golden opportunity in the bottom of the seventh after sophomore outfielder Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, MN/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) singled to start the inning and promptly stole second base. The proceeding hitters could not bring her home though as she was stranded at second. Southwestern went on to score twice in the top of the eighth, which went unanswered by the Crusaders. Leading the way for Dallas was Jessica Mollner who went 2 for 3 with a walk, a stolen base and 2 runs. She was supported by Liana Reveles, who had two hits and freshman infielder Morgan Smith (Irving, TX/Bishop Dunne), who had three. On the mound Reveles gave up 5 runs (2 earned) over 2 innings, while Thomas gave up 2 runs over 6 innings.

The University of Dallas looks to bounce back this Thursday, April 15, in a doubleheader against LeTourneau University. These will be the Crusaders' last home games of the 2010 season.
