Dallas Softball Puts Together Clean Sweep over Trinity

The University of Dallas Women's softball team traveled to San Antonio this weekend for a doubleheader against the Trinity University Tigers and walked away with 2 big wins, 2-1 and 4-1.

The first game of the series was hotly contested from start to finish, with UD coming out on top 2-1. Dallas took the lead early in the first inning when freshman infielder Brittany Castro's (Houston, TX/Langham Creek H.S) squeeze bunt brought junior outfielder Jessie Allen (Madison, MS/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) in for the score. Trinity battled back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but an inning ending throw from senior center fielder Amber Adams (Dallas, TX/Dallas Christian H.S.) stifled the Trinity rally.  The game remained deadlocked until the sixth inning when Adams led off the inning with a single, followed by a stand-up double from sophomore Rebecca Burns (River Ridge, LA/John Curtis Christian School) that drove in the go ahead run.

UD's stingy defense shut out Trinity for the remainder of the game, and UD walked away with the victory.  Sophomore pitcher Liana Reveles (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.) started for UD and pitched a solid three innings before Thomas came on in relief.  Over the last four inning, Thomas completely shut out the Trinity batters, not allowing any hits or runs and only walking two while striking out three.

In the second game of the day, UD was again able to shut down Trinity's offense with a 4-1 win. For the first half of the game UD was unable to produce on offense, and entering the fourth inning they trailed by a run. Then in both the fourth and fifth innings Dallas pushed a run across the plate, and with their 2 run sixth inning were able to put the Tigers away for good.

Whitney Thomas was again impressive in the second game. Offensively, she drove in two runs on one of her two doubles.  From the circle, she went the distance in impressive fashion - seven innings, three strikeouts and only on run on three hits.  Freshman catcher Morgan Smith (Irving, TX/Bishop Dunne) also had a great game, going 1-3 at the plate, scoring a run, and stealing 3 bases.  After adding a steal in the first game of the doubleheader, Smith has a team leading 12 swipes for the year.

The 15-9 UD softball team can enjoy their victories during an extended break. They don't play again until April 7 when they take on UT-Dallas in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00pm in Irving, TX.
