Dallas Softball Splits Doubleheader with Austin College

The UD women's softball team met Austin College for the second time this season. Entering the first game of the doubleheader the Crusaders hoped to avenge two early season losses that they were dealt by the Roos, who defeated UD 8-9 and 4-8 exactly one month ago.  Dallas won the first game in walk off style 5-4, before losing 18-8 in the second half of the doubleheader.

The Crusaders took the first game of the doubleheader tonight, beating the Roos 5-4 with a walk off sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Brittany Castro (Houston, TX/Langham Creek H.S.) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Entering the inning, the game was knotted at 4-4, and UD earned the chance to win it by shutting Austin College down, only allowing 1 hit and outing 3 out of the first 4 Roo batters in the top of the inning. When UD came up to bat sophomore outfielder Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, MN/Convent of the Visitation School) tripled to put herself in scoring position. Next up to bat was Castro who drove Mollner home to secure the win for the UD. Mollner finished the game with a triple, 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored, and Castro drove in 2 in one official at bat.  Freshmen catcher Morgan Smith (Irving, TX/Bishop Dunne H.S.) also had a big game, ending the contest 1-3 at the plate, including her first homerun, with 2 RBI and a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Liana Reveles (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.) picked up win number 7 after entering in relief midway through the game and tossing three and two thirds solid innings.  She scattered 5 hits, only surrendered a run, and struck out 3.

Coming off of their first game win against the Roos, UD had a bit of a letdown in the second game of the doubleheader, losing 18-8 in a seven inning game. Austin College came out hot in the first three innings, jumping to an 11 run lead with the help of a 7 run third inning, and never relinquished the lead. Sophomore Jessica Mollner again led Dallas at the plate. She went 3-4, including a triple and a homerun, and had 2 RBI and scored 3 times. Also hitting well was senior outfielder Amber Adams (Dallas, TX/Dallas Christian Academy), who went 2-4 at the plate and also had 2 RBI. Reveles picked up the loss in the nightcap of the series.

Next up for the 11-8 Crusaders is a home doubleheader against Husson College. The game will start at 6:00pm on Friday, March 19.
