UD Softball Takes 3 of 4 in Spring Fling Classic, 7 Game Win Streak Snapped in Finale

The Dallas softball team kept up their momentum to defeat the Blackburn College Beavers 13-1 in their third game of the Warrior Spring Fling Classic, before having their 7 game win streak snapped by tournament host the Hendrix College Warriors in the finale, 3-8.

In today's tournament opening game against the Beavers from Blackburn, UD jumped out to a 1 run lead in the top of the second before adding 10 runs the next frame to propel them to the 12 run win in the five inning game. The lone blemish came in the third inning for Dallas when Blackburn managed to score their only run off of UD freshman starter Liana Reveles (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.). In an otherwise brilliant effort on the mound, Reveles gave up 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 8 in the shortened game to earn her fifth win of the year, and UD's seventh in a row. Several Crusaders had huge games at the plate including senior outfielder/infielder Amber Adams (Dallas, TX/Dallas Christian Academy) and junior outfielder Cheryl Hinze (Houston, TX/Langham Creek H.S.) who both led the team with 3 hits. Adams added an RBI and Hinze collected 2. Freshman infielder Sandra Gallegos (Houston, TX/Lamar H.S.) led the team with 4 RBI, 1 coming off her fourth inning double and 3 coming on her third inning homerun. Senior infielder/pitcher Whitney Thomas (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic) recorded 3 RBI with all of them coming off her 2, third inning doubles.

In their final game of the tournament, UD fell behind early after starting pitcher Whitney Thomas (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic) struggled to fin the zone and Hendrix put up 3, 2, and 1 run in the second, third, and fourth innings. The Dallas offense slowly climbed back into the game by putting up 3 runs in the top of the fifth before being held scoreless in the next two frames. Freshman infielder Brittany Castro (Houston, TX/Langham Creek H.S.) drove in the first run of the 3 run fifth with an RBI single to centerfield that plated freshman catcher Morgan Smith (Irving, TX/Bishop Dunne) to get UD on the board, and then freshman infielder/pitcher Liana Reveles doubled to left center to drive in sophomore outfielder Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, MN/Convent of the Visitation School). Senior pitcher/infielder Whitney Thomas' sacrifice fly later that inning to drive in Castro turned out to be the last UD run scored. Overall, Castro finished the game with 3 hits in 4 at bats, including a double, and Reveles and Mollner both stroked doubles of their own. Thomas started the game on the mound and gave up 6 earned runs in 5 & two thirds innings while striking out 6 before being replaced by Reveles who recorded the final out.

As mentioned earlier, the softball team hits the road for a bus trip to Fort Myers, FL for 6 games in the Gene Cusic Classic. UD's first game starts at 9:00am against Anna Maria College on Tuesday, March 9.
