Men's Soccer Drop Tight Game with Lyon

September 17, 2023

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's soccer team lost their non-conference match against Lyon College 2-1 on Sunday, falling to 1-4-1 on the year.

Lyon got off to a quick start, netting the first goal inside the first five minutes after cutting through the Dallas back line with some incisive passing.  The Crusaders were quick to respond and had a pair of opportunities to level the match soon after conceding.  Antonio Gachiniero had a long range effort from a free kick that sailed over the cross bar, and Jaiden Languilli missed the target with his effort at the end of a long run down the right wing.

The game was leveled in the 21st minute by no doing of the Crusaders. Instead, a castastrophic miscommunication saw the ball passed into the net by one of Lyon's centerbacks from nearly 35 yards out.  Not long after, Alex Melgoza saw an opportunity from just outside the box and took it, rifling a shot safely into the keepers hands.

The first half ended all square, but it didn't take long for the Scots to take the lead in the second half.  Lyon was awarded a penalty after a hard shoulder-to-shoulder challenge in the box and made good on their chance, taking a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute.

From there the match more or less descended into madness, with fouls and cards aplenty on both sides.  Luke Wilmington had the last shot of the day for the Crusaders in the 64th minute, and Caden Esquivel had what was arguably the highlight of the day with a phenomenal top corner save diving to his right in the 87th minute to give his team a chance to tie the game in the dying minutes.
