Men's Soccer Fights to a Stalemate with ETBU

September 4, 2023

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's soccer drew their non-conference match against East Texas Baptist on Monday night.  They are now 0-1-1 on the season.

The Tigers dominated much of the early minutes in terms of possession, as it took Dallas some time to settle into the match.  Though their possession of the ball was not quite what they would have liked, the Crusaders were threats on the counter-attack from the first whistle.  It was a counter-attack against the perceived run of play that produced the first goal of the game, as Antonio Gachiniero found Alex Melgoza in the box at the end of a quick run down the length of the field and Melgoza drilled the ball into the top right corner to give Dallas the 1-0 lead after 19 minutes.

Though they were not short on time, the Tigers offensive moves seemed to grow more and more desperate throughout the first half.  The Crusaders easily maintained control of the midfield, forcing the frustrated Tigers to play kick-ball for the rest of the period.  Though there were a few tense moments for the Dallas back line as a result, the Crusaders maintained their 1-0 lead at the half.

The Tigers turned the tide in the second half and were very much on the front foot.  They were rewarded for their efforts with the equalizer in the 67th minute, followed quickly by the go-ahead goal just five minutes later.

The final 20 minutes were frantic as ETBU looked to score the dagger, and Dallas fought for the equalizer.  Chances were few and far between in the final stretch, but a little bit of luck gave Dallas the window they needed as ETBU's goakeeper, Anthony Lozada, mishandled a cross into the box, allowing Luke Wilmington to poke in the equalizer at the back post with just over five minutes to play.

That would be the last meaningful chance of the game, as Dallas snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat.
