Crusaders Fall to Howard Payne Despite Excellent Showing

Brownwood, TX. - The University of Dallas men's soccer team lost on Friday on the road against Howard Payne University.  The Yellowjackets scored a pair of goals midway through the first half and held off a late UD surge for the win .

Howard Payne took the lead with a goal in the 21st minute.  Zachery Moreno scored his second goal of the season to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.

In the 24 minute, Howard Payne struck again as Daniel Hernandez scored his first career goal to extend the lead to 2-0.

At the half, Dallas led statistically across the board despite trailing Howard Payne.  The Crusaders led in shots, 9-7, shots on goal, 3-2, and corner kicks, 8-1.

To start the second half, 2020-2021 starting goalkeeper Goncalo Pernas (Lisbon Portugal) entered the game for Hayden Hampton (Roanoke, Texas).

In the 66th minute, Dallas finally put the ball in the net as Karson Pennell (Southlake, Texas) scored his second goal of the year to cut the deficit in half.

Dallas had two more shots in the half from Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) and Pennell in the 71st and 78th minute, but were unable to equalize the game.

The Yellowjackets scored one more goal for good measure in the 90th minute to seal the game.  Anthony Herrera scored his first career goal with eight second left for the final score of 3-1.

At the end of the game, both teams were even in shots and shots on goal with 12 and four apiece, but UD added two more corner kicks for a final advantage of 10-1.

Reynolds led all players in shots with four.  Pennell had three shots and had a game high two shots on goal.  Alex Melgoza (Grand Prairie, Texas) also had three shots and picked up his first yellow card of the year in the 80th minute.

With the loss Dallas drops to 3-2-0 (0-0-0), and with the win Howard Payne improves to 2-3-1 (0-0-0).  Dallas continues their road trip on Sunday in Colorado Springs against Colorado College. Kickoff will be at 12:00 PM CST.
