Crusaders Secure 1st Win in 2OT on Saturday against Schreiner

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's soccer team punched in the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute of Saturday's match to defeat Schreiner University 1-0 on a wet afternoon. Jose Martinez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) put in the golden goal in the second overtime with Chase Reynolds and Nate Riddle helping on assists. Karson Pannell (Southlake, Texas) doesn't show up in the stat sheet, but his dribbling found Riddle from midfield to the right side by the bleachers for the next touch to Riddle and created the deciding sequence.

It was the first win of the campaign for the Crusaders, who are 1-1 now. Schreiner drops to 0-1 in its season opener.

It was another wet match for UD in its second game in three days. Unlike its opener with Texas Lutheran, the offense had plenty of shot opportunities with a 29-10 advantage. Although most of these came in the second half with the home team generating a 14-2 edge. The Crusaders also took 10 corner kicks compared to four by SU, but interestingly the Mountaineers took all three in the second half. The foul count was even at 12 and both teams had three yellow cards.

Scoreless at the end of regulation, the Crusaders attempted the first four shots and had three corner kicks in five minutes at the start of the extra frame. Two were on target with SU's goalkeeper Cody Smith making the grabs. He had 12 saves in the match. Both of the Mountaineers shot attempts went wide.

UD's hero of the game, Martinez, had five shots and three on goal for team-bests. Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas) and Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) each contributed four shots and had half of them on target. UD placed 13 shots on frame in the match.

Goncalo Pernas (Lisbon, Portugal) notched the shutout and had three saves against three shots faced. The defense also came up with a big team save.

"Schreiner did a good job in the press and were defensively more disciplined than they have been in years," Analyzed head coach David Hoffmann. "It was challenging playing in less than 48 hours against a team that was playing their first match of the week."

Hoffmann added, "Brady was our man of the match. Fantastic defensive presence in the midfield. His save off the line was as important as the goal we scored."

Dallas plays on the road for the first time next Saturday, March 6 at Centenary College for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
