Men's Soccer erases 2-0 Deficit; Fall to No. 3 Trinity in 2nd OT

IRVING, Texas – It was déjà vu at the end of regulation again between Trinity University and the University of Dallas men's soccer team on Friday in a 2-2 match. The third-ranked Tigers took the road victory this time as the golden goal by Austin Michaelis in the 104^th minute sealed a 3-2 final. It was the Crusaders first loss in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and first since the second match of the season in a double overtime setback at Howard Payne University on September 2nd.

Similar to the previous matchup in San Antonio, Trinity struck first in the early minutes into play with Jacob Hallenberger connecting on a lengthy free kick that snuck into the upper part of the goal. The Tigers increased the advantage 2-0 at the 25:07 minute mark on a goal from Christian Sakshaug from Cooper Fyfe on the assist.

The Crusaders answered back with a pair of goals throughout the game to even the score. Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) tallied his first collegiate goal four minutes after Trinity's second scoring result to cut things in half. He dribbled the ball along the left side of the field and completed a cross on the lower right side. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) earned the assist with a touch to setup that run. Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) notched the equalizer 14 minutes into the second half. The striker punched in a goal on the right side for his team-high sixth goal and third in as many matches. Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) assisted the goal.

Both sides countered attacks the remainder of the game trying to find the go-ahead advantage. The home team did outshoot Trinity 7-5 in the first half, but were outdone 17-7 the rest of the way, including 3-2 in overtime. Trinity held a 12-4 difference in corner kicks and both teams were charged 18 fouls.

The Crusaders two shots in extra time were on goal. Blake Lieberman nabbed both saves and finished with six in 103:25 minutes between the posts. Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) made three for UD in the full match. Sakshaug created the scoring opportunity for Trinity in second overtime on a cross from the right part of the field near his own bench. Michaelis headed the gamewinner on the upper left of the goal, and lifted Trinity to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in SCAC play.

Dallas moved to 6-2-2 on the season and 5-1-2 in the conference. This was the sixth overtime match for the Crusaders this season and third at home. It was also the first time this year that UD allowed more than two goals.
