IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team and Austin College settled for a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon. A goal in the first half put the 'Roos in front, and a penalty kick by Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) in the other half of regulation knotted the score. After two overtimes neither team could net the golden goal and each settled for their second draws in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play. Dallas moved to 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-2 in conference, while AC went to 4-2-3 and 2-1-2.
The Crusaders attempted the first two shots within five minutes of the start of the match, but it was Austin College that earned the first lead with Jack Wheaton taking through ball into the back of the net in the 18th minute. It was the first goal surrended by Dallas in about 209 minutes, which included back-to-back shutouts the last two matches. That lead remained heading through halftime, and both sides were nearly even with UD having a 7-6 edge in shots.
In the second stanza, the home side mustered a 15-4 shot advantage and possessed the ball majority of the duration. Schwarz finally notched the equalizer on a PK at the 59:47 minute mark. It was the senior's first goal of 2017 and he remains perfect going 8-for-8 in his career. He totaled five last fall.
It was a physical match as 32 fouls were called altogether. This included seven yellow cards with Austin College receiving four of them. Six of the yards were handed out beyond the 72nd minute. The guests had a pair of shots apiece in both overtimes, and Sean Carlin (3-1-2) for Dallas made two saves in the first 10-minute frame. The Crusaders had their last shots in the first extra period by Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) and A.J. Zaugg (Dallas, Texas), respectively, in the late stages of period. Both were contained by AC's goalie Joseph Khalaf (4-2-3).
Khalaf was huge in 110 minutes for the 'Roos as the keeper made 11 saves. Seven were notched in the second half. Carlin for earned four stops for UD in his first double OT match of his career. The other tie for Dallas was shortened to one OT at Colorado College due to darkness.
Overall the Crusaders have played five overtime games this season, which surpasses their total in the regular season the previous two years. In those campaigns, Dallas did total five overtimes overall, but both times a single contest counted in the SCAC Quarterfinals. The last time the program played at least five extra period games in the regular season was in 2006 with six total.
