Crusaders upset No. 4 Trinity on Friday; Ogueri with final 2 UD Goals in 3-2 OT Thriller

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) keyed the University of Dallas men's soccer team's offense with the golden goal in the 96th minute of overtime to lift his squad 3-2 at No. 4 Trinity University Friday night. The win is the first in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for the Crusaders, who improved to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league. The Tigers suffered their first blemish of the campaign, moving to 5-1 and 1-1 in SCAC matches. Trinity also ended a 47-game winning streak at Paul McGinlay Field dating back to September 10th, 2013.

The home team gained a quick advantage with Quentin Van Der Lee scoring an unassisted goal at the 2:58 minute mark. That margin lasted only about five minutes as UD's Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) punched his first collegiate goal of the season. It was the first scoring play for Dallas since 9:31 minutes into the Howard Payne match almost two weeks ago.

The score remained even most of the opening stanza until Ogueri notched his first goal of the season and gave Dallas a 2-1 lead at the 36:13 mark. Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) assisted the goal for his first collegiate point.

From that juncture, the Crusaders' defense produced a gritty effort trying to keep Trinity from finding the back of the net. The Tigers outshot UD 17-11 overall and 9-5 in the second half. There was a crucial foul on Trinity while taking a set piece with around 12 minutes left that negated what would have been the tying goal at the time.

However, Christian Sakshaug did smack a ball on the right side of the goal at the 84:02 mark to knot the match 2-2. Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) grabbed three saves and also made some big defensive dives on loose balls to back a strong Dallas defensive effort.

The Crusaders faced overtime for the fourth time in a row this season in just as many games. Having already earned every outcome in the records to date, Ogueri decided to etch UD's second game-winning goal of the season for the Crusaders second win all-time against Trinity and first in San Antonio. Ogueri was the second UD player to have multiple goals in a match. Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) was the other player with two goals, including the gamewinner, in the season opener versus George Fox University.

The other time the Crusaders prevailed over Trinity was Sept. 18th, 2015 in Irving by a 1-0 final. That knocked off the nationally top ranked team at the time. Dallas' first equalizer of the match was the first score for the team on Trinity's home turf since Alex Lebi ('12) netted one in the 78th minute of a 4-1 setback on Sept. 21st, 2012.
