7 Rounds of PKs advances Texas Lutheran past Crusaders Friday
SHERMAN, Texas – The No. 6 seed University of Dallas men's soccer team battled No. 3 Texas Lutheran University to a tie in 110 minutes on Friday afternoon in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Quarterfinal. The Crusaders (7-9-3) fell in penalty kicks, 5-4, as Texas Lutheran (7-11-1) moved on to the semifinals Saturday versus No. 2 Seeded Colorado College.
Through 45 minutes of action, the score remained knotted 0-all. Dallas held a slight edge in shots 9-6. The Bulldogs shifted the momentum in opportunities the next 55 minutes by outshooting their opposition 14-7, which included 4-1 in the first extra regulation. UD mustered the final two shots in the second overtime. Trae Hampton (Paducah, Ky.) missed wide left in the 106th minute, and Andrew Ciancone's (Houston, Texas) final effort got blocked in the closing ticks.
Dallas earned its third tie of the campaign after playing five matches beyond 90 minutes. This is the second consecutive season that the Crusaders played five overtime matches in a year, including the SCAC Quarterfinals. The last time Dallas tallied three draws in a season was 2009 and displayed an identical overall record.
The advancement to the next round was decided by penalty kicks. The first three attempts combined were missed including two by TLU. Sean Taylor (Austin, Texas) connected with the first PK to get the Crusaders a 1-0 edge. From there, six consecutive shots were successful until back-to-back Dallas misses ended the seven rounds.

- Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) paced UD with a game-highs in shot attempts (7) and shots on goal (3).
- Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ciancone also tallied multi-shot games with a pair apiece. The tandem contributed one shot on goal each.
- A trio of Crusaders rounded out the team's nine shots on frame with perfect percentages from Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas), Ben Mannings (Bath, England), and Taylor.
- Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) closed his career with seven shutouts – including three in 2016. The keeper grabbed four saves to give him exactly 200 for his career.
- His counterpart Victor Rodriguez (7-11-1) made nine stops in 110 minutes and prevented Dallas from retying the PK count.
- David Ching and Guillermo Guerra combined for nine of the team's 20 shots. Ching led with five. Guerra posted half of TLU's four shots on goal.
- The Bulldogs outdid the Crusaders in corner kicks 11-5. This included six in the second stanza. Four of UD's corners came in overtime. Three were in the final 10 minutes.
