Schwarz dials the PK in Overtime; Men's Soccer claims Road Win at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (7-6-1, 4-5-1 SCAC) avenged an overtime setback from earlier this season against Southwestern University (7-7, 6-4 SCAC) as Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) drilled the necessary penalty kick in extra regulation to give UD a road win Friday night.

Neither team was able to find the back of the netting for 88 minutes, despite forcing several opportunities throughout the contest. Nicholas Vega (Dallas, Texas) broke through for UD at the 87:57 minute mark for his second goal in the past three games. This one came from a corner kick that Schwarz lifted to start the sequence.

It appeared Vega's second goal of his freshman year would be the game-winning tally, but Southwestern quickly got an equalizer at the 89:07 mark. Wil Mekelburg got his own rebound deep in the box and was able to put it away on the right side to knot the scoreboard with under a minute in regulation.

The Crusaders were pitted in their third overtime match of the season – all in conference action – and second in past three games. UD earned its first win beyond 90 minutes this season in the first overtime win on the road this year and first away victory since September 1, 2012 at Concordia University (1-0). Prior to that point only two other such occurrences happened with the road squad going 0-1-1.

In the extra frame, both teams were called for offsides and then Dallas earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 98th minute. Schwarz remained perfect this season with his fifth PK going hard to the left and just tickling the twine to start the Crusaders 1-0 on a four-game road stint.

- Schwarz boasted perfect shot on goal percentage with three on frame. His golden goal was his sixth of the season, tying the midfielder with Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas) for the team lead.

- Naseem Said (Pearland, Texas) matched a team-high three shots. A trio of players also notched multi-shot performances including: Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas), Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas), and Holdridge.

- Dallas outshot the Pirates 18-14, including a 10-8 edge in the second stanza.

- The road squad doubled the shots on goal column 8-4.

- Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) made three saves in 97:19 minutes for the win.

- Southwestern was led by Carlos Huntley-Jimenez with four shots. Christian Lopez, Jake Swonke, and Victor Herrera all added two attempts.

- The Pirates held a slight edge in corner kicks 7-6. They were called for 14 fouls, including eight in second half. UD got called for five infractions.

QUOTABLE

"It was a very entertaining game. Boys did well to get the win…the late equalizer and goal called back could have led to a mental break. They did well to put those setbacks behind them." – Head Coach David Hoffmann on his teams' performance
