Vega's goal in 84th minute helps Men's Soccer Draw vs. Schreiner 1-1 on Friday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (6-5-1, 3-4-1 SCAC) gritted out the equalizer goal in the final 10 minutes that was required to force overtime, and would draw 1-1 with Schreiner University (2-10-2, 1-6-1 SCAC) on Friday. Nicholas Vega (Dallas, Texas) came up with his first collegiate points of his career on a goal at the 83:04 minute mark. The Crusaders took advantage of a corner kick started by Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) and Garrett Hammer (Colleyville, Texas) deflected the ball setting up for UD's lone scorer on the right side inside the middle of the box.

In extra regulation, the home team had momentum outshooting the Mountaineers 7-2, including 3-0 in the first overtime. Two of UD's shots to start the first extra 10 minutes were placed on frame. Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) nearly had a golden goal as Schreiner's Brandon Anselmi just got in front for the big time save.

The Crusaders took the first four shots in second OT, but were unsuccessful finding the gamewinner. As the Maroon and White made a final effort in the last four and half minutes with a pair of shots, both looks came close to ending the match as UD's Vega was clutch again this time with a defensive save that cleared the ball out to keep the score knotted.

Opening 45 minutes resulted in a 0-0 halftime, with the Crusaders holding an 11-6 shot edge in the frame. That was the highest amount of attempts by both teams in a half. Dallas did appear to have broken an early tie with Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas) scoring, but were whistled offsides to erase the goal.

This proved costly as Schreiner gained the lead in the 56th minute on a netter by Trey Brittenum. Dalton Reid made a cross from the left side and the guests pounded the goal just out of reach of the Crusaders' leaping Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas).

Dallas did not hold possession much or have many strong looks during the first portion of the second stanza. From the 72:41 minute mark on, however, the Crusaders held a 7-1 advantage in shots including the game-tying one by Vega. The Mountaineers' keeper faced four of UD's final shots in that span and made three saves.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- UD notched a season best 28 shots and eclipsed 20 attempts for the second time of the year. The other time was the season opener against Howard Payne University (21). Schreiner had 12 shots.

- Dallas edged the Mountaineers in corner kicks 7-3, and did not allow the visitors one past the first half.

- Ciancone had a game-high six shots with three on goal. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) followed with four and a trio of players had three attempts. That unit involved: Sean Taylor (Austin, Texas), Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas), and Holdridge.

- Gamueda (6-5-1) allowed a goal and made three saves in 110 minutes between the posts.

- His counterpart Anselmi (1-5-1) garnered nine saves in a complete double overtime match.

- Alan Aviles had a team-high four shots and Chase Smith added three. Reid was the other player on the opposition with a multi-shot game.

QUOTABLE

"From a run of play perspective I felt we looked a good bet to get the win. However, when Schreiner grabbed the lead it looked like it might be one of those days. Obviously, we want to win, but given how hard we had to work to draw level picking up the point is glass half full." –Head Coach David Hoffmann on today's performance
