Five goals lift Men's Soccer over Howard Payne in Season Opener

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas (1-0) enjoyed an offensive outburst, totaling five goals off 21 shots and 13 shots on goal to secure a 5-1 victory over Howard Payne University (0-1) in Thursday's season opener. Five individual Crusaders netted their first goals of the campaign and seven players finished with at least a point.

Senior Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas) got the home team in the scoring column first early out of the kickoff. The 2015 team leading scorer was assisted by freshman Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas). Within the 11th minute, another freshman (Bixby, Okla.) found the point category with his first collegiate goal. UD wrapped up its scoring in the opening stanza as sophomore Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) dialed in a goal at the 33:29 minute mark. His scoring result opened the team's largest advantage of the contest.

Howard Payne's Josue Vasquez ended the scoring streak about two minutes later with a goal from Dylan Person. Dallas remained in front 3-1 at halftime.

The offense remained in the Crusaders' favor throughout the next 45 minutes however. JuniorLuke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) connected successfully on a penalty kick at the 57:19 minute mark, and junior Trae Hampton (Paducah, Ky.) completed the scoring with an assist from Eddison Ramos(Prosper, Texas).

INSIDE THE BOX

- Dallas outshot the Yellow Jackets 21-13. UD also put more shots on target with a 13-5 difference.

- This victory counted as number 221 in the program's history. 14th Year Head Coach David Hoffmann now has 121 in his career too. 

- Senior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) earned the win with 71:55 minutes in goal. He made three saves.

- Howard Payne logged 6 corner kicks with five in the first half. The Crusaders notched three.

- For the Yellow Jackets, Nicholas Panameno made six saves against nine shots faced in the start.

Notching a goal 53 seconds is a dream start. Especially since it resulted in a pattern of play we worked on in training."
