Overtime Setback ends Men's Soccer's season in SCAC Tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (8-8-2) fell in overtime on Friday to Schreiner University (8-10-1). It was the second time this fall the two programs went beyond regulation in head-to-head matches, and was the third contest in 2015 to be decided by a 1-0 outcome.

Dallas was on the wrong end for the second-straight time, as a golden goal by Cody Hollingshead in the second overtime lifted the Mountaineers to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Semifinals. The game-winner from Hollingshead was his third of the campaign and occurred as a header from a lengthy 40-yard kick from Rene Pena on the assist. The sequence occurred at the 102:27 minute mark.

Besides that netter, neither squad would chime in with a goal throughout the contest in game two of the SCAC Tournament. Schreiner held an 18-11 advantage in shot attempts this game and placed eight on goal compared to three by the Crusaders. Corner kicks were near even as the number three seed, UD, forced a 6-5 lead in that category.

There were a couple early saves by both goalkeepers within about 12 minutes after kickoff, but not many throughout the game. Junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) was saddled with the hard-luck loss in 107:33 minutes of action between the posts. His seven saves match the same result that credited him SCAC defensive player-of-the-week entering the weekend.

Earning the win was Blake Lawson (5-9-1), who blanked the Navy and White in a complete-game effort to go with three saves.

"It was a tough game to lose, boys played fine but we lacked anyone stepping up to give us an A game," Head Coach David Hoffmann stated. "I feel if we had a couple boys turn in a top performance the result could have gone our way. Credit to Schreiner, this was their best performance in the three times we have played them this year."

Junior Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas) led the Crusaders with three shot attempts. Freshmen Sean Taylor (Austin, Texas) and Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) each had multi-shot games as well. The team's leading scorer, Holdridge, placed two shots on goal and Taylor kicked the other on frame.

The hero of the match, Hollingshead, posted a game-high four shots with two on goal. Gregg Gutierrez, Alan Aviles, and Robert Hensley contributed three shots apiece.

Dallas has concluded the fall campaign in the setback. However, there was some positive reflection from Coach Hoffmann.

"Colton is one of the best players to have pulled on a shirt for UD. He will be sorely missed next season." This is reference to lone senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas) taking to the pitch one final time in 2015. He netted the school's first hat trick since 2008 a couple weeks ago at Centenary College, and earned SCAC Co-Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the feat.

Dallas also managed to post program-bests since joining the league five seasons ago in conference wins with 7 and points with 23.

"Hopefully, with everyone else on the squad returning we can build on this year," Coach Hoffmann concluded.
