Overtime heartbreaker Result for Men's Soccer on Sunday against Southwestern University

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (7-7-1, 6-4-1 SCAC) dropped an overtime match on Sunday against Southwestern University (6-10, 6-5 SCAC) by a final of 2-1. The setback keeps Dallas in third place and one point ahead of the Pirates in the current standings. It is the first time UD has fallen since league play began at home, ending a six-game winning streak at the friendly confines. It is also the third time to go beyond regulation on the campaign, with the Crusaders taking its first defeat in such a scenario.

The first half was pretty steady, despite Southwestern accumulating a seven to four advantage on shots by the break. However, only one lone attempt was a shot on goal compared to the Navy and White putting half of its efforts on frame.

The Pirates broke an even score in the 61st minute as Andres Carreno-Mendez forced his way through a tackle and was able to score on the upper right side one-on-one against junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas). The keeper would work a complete 94:37-minute match and made four saves in the tough setback.

Dallas would be outshot 21-13, but were even with SU in shots on goal with seven apiece. Both team's had an increase in shot attempts in the second half, with the Pirates reflecting a 13-9 edge, but the Crusaders would benefit on a miscue by the Gold and Black defense to knot the contest.

At the 85:13 minute mark, freshman Eric Haigh (Frisco, Texas) launched one of his signature flip throws deep down the right side of the field and sophomore Naseem Said (Pearland, Texas) would get the ball to deflect off a Southwestern defenders' head into the back into his team's own net. Said's third goal of the year for Dallas electrified the home squad as a new ballgame was set for less than five minutes of regulation.

Senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas) would have his lone shot on goal be saved a moment after that as it turned back to the defense having to withstand the Southwestern offense. During the final four minutes, the Crusaders did hold up, keeping the remaining three shots from finding the back of the net. This included a huge save by Gamueda and the UD players clearing the ball out of the box in the ticking five seconds to send things to overtime.

However, the first shot of the frame by SU's Jake Swonke would beat the Dallas keeper right at the 94:37 minute mark and lift the Pirates to a road win. It was his seventh goal of the year and locks him in a three-way tie at the top of the conference – which includes UD junior Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas).

Five players for the Crusaders totaled multi-shot games including: freshmen Sean Taylor (Austin, Texas), Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas), sophomores Trae Hampton (Paducah, K.Y.), Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.), and Allen.

Mendez amassed a game-high six shots and kicked three shots on goal to lead all players. Swonke hit both of his shots on target, and the golden goal was assisted by Rory McCullough and Clay Martin. Ryan Benner (4-6) took the win, making six saves in 94:37 minutes between the posts.
