Penalty Kick downs Men's Soccer on Sunday at Schreiner University

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer (6-6-1, 5-3-1 SCAC) team suffered a 1-0 setback on Sunday at Schreiner University (5-8, 3-6 SCAC). It is the first time this fall, Dallas has dropped consecutive league matches and moved the squad to third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) rankings. The Crusaders would also split the season series with Schreiner, as the home team prevailed in both meetings this year by the same final result.

Both squads grinded out a scoreless contest into the 85th minute of a sunny afternoon match, but Dallas would get whistled for a costly foul that awarded a penalty kick for the Mountaineers. Cody Hollingshead connected successfully on the PK to give the home team the only scoring play SU needed to triumph. The game-winner occurred at the 84:06 mark.

"Schreiner played disciplined soccer with a plan, and was a very level game that felt like a draw to me," head coach David Hoffmann stated.

Dallas also had an opportunity to go up early 1-0 in the beginning half, but would be whistled for an offsides that negated the lead. UD would be called for being off twice in the first half.

"The goal for us that was disallowed in the first half for offside might have gone our way, and then the late PK against us was one that I have never seen called until today," Coach Hoffmann reflected. "I felt we played well enought to get a point."

It is the second time this season – both in away conference matches – that Dallas has been topped 1-0 by a penalty kick. Dallas was charged with 14 fouls compared to eight by the Maroon and White, with nine coming for UD in the second half.

The shot count favored Schreiner 12-9, and the Mountaineers placed seven shots on goal in comparison to four by the Navy and White.

A trio of Crusaders etched multiple shot results including: juniors Stephen Gahan (Vancouver, Wash.), Tommy Byrd (Mansfield, Texas), and Ben Mannings (Bath, England) with two apiece. The group also tallied three of the team's four shots on target with one each. Sophomore Luke Schwarz added the other shot on goal for his one attempt of the day.

The two teams managed to equal corner kicks with six each. Schreiner would garner a 4-2 edge in the first half, while UD flipped the numbers in a 4-2 difference in the final stanza.

Junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) made five saves in 90 minutes as the goalkeeper for the Crusaders. A team save was also credited in the game. Schreiner's Blake Lawson made three saves in the shutout, while the Mountaineers had a team save to give them four overall.

The hero of the afternoon offensively, Hollingshead, tied Andres Penaloza with a game-high three shot attempts. All of Hollingshead's efforts were shots on goal. Gregg Gutierrez added a multi-shot game with two.
