Men's Soccer slips by Austin College; Holdridge scores twice on Sunday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (6-4-1, 5-1-1 SCAC) held onto its fifth one-goal victory on Sunday versus Austin College (4-8-1, 2-5 SCAC). Dallas extended its winning streak to a season-long, three matches, and maintained sole possession of second place in the conference standings. The first half of league play has been complete.

This contest featured the teams trading goals throughout the first half of the opening frame, but the Crusaders would get the advantage for good in the 65th minute of the second by junior Barton Holdridge's (Forth Worth, Texas) game-winner.

The forward produced both of UD's goals and increased his total on the year to a team-high of seven. He has compiled three goals in the past three matches, with all occurring on the past two Sundays. Holdridge also netted his second multiple scoring contest of the season.

Austin College took an early advantage at the 10:47 minute mark on a goal by Garrett Matacale. He settled control of the ball at the top of the box and was able to score in the upper left middle of the net. The netter ended a 170:12 minutes stretch of the opposition scoring.

Holdridge countered with the equalizer and his first goal of the game with a header inside the box on the left side at the 18:41 mark. Sophomore Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Arizona) was credited with the assist – his third on the year – as he delivered a fantastic cross pass to UD's leading scorer.

Fellow classmate Jake Schnell (Austin, Texas) added his second assist in the past three games with a near, whole field pass that found Holdridge waiting to kick the go-ahead goal for Dallas in the final half.

Austin College mustered two final shots in the remaining minutes from that portion of the game, with one being nabbed by junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) for one of his pair of saves overall. The Roos also had a final free kick in the closing seven seconds after a Yellow Card was charged to Schwarz. UD held on though as the defensive unit kept the visitors from connecting on a final shot attempt.

In the match, the Crusaders outshot AC 18-8 and in shots on goal 9-3. The home team also garnered six corner kicks compared to none by the Roos. UD was able to gain five of those in the first half.

Sunday's offensive hero, Holdridge, paced the Navy and White with a game-high seven shot attempts and placed six on target. Both categories were season-bests for the junior from Forth Worth, Texas. Sophomore A.J. Zaugg (Dallas, Texas) followed with a season-high four shots. Also notching multi-shot efforts were Schnell and sophomore Trae Hampton (Paducah, Ky.) with three and two, respectively.

Gamueda (6-4-1) worked 90 minutes in the net, while making two saves against three shots faced. He has allowed two goals in separate contests the past six times on the pitch.

Austin College had Thomas Quick and Jack Wheaton display multiple shot games with two each. The duo along with Matacale kicked shots on goal. Two goalkeepers split 45 minute halves for AC. Michael Moran was tabbed with the start and picked up three saves. Joseph Khalaf (3-4-1) was saddled with the setback to go with four stops.
