Penalty Kick the Difference in Men's Soccer setback Friday at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – A penalty goal proved to be the difference in a nail-biter between the University of Dallas men's soccer team (3-4-1, 2-1-1 SCAC) and Texas Lutheran University (6-1, 3-1 SCAC) on Friday night. TLU would prevail 1-0 to give the Crusaders their first setback in conference play. The last three matches for UD have resulted in one goal total being scored in the tilt.

The Bulldogs earned an opportunity on a penalty kick from Isaac Lopez at the 20:25 minute mark, and connected on the lone goal that would lift the home team on the evening.

Dallas would be outshot 17-12, but did place six shots on goal compared to five from the Black and Gold. At halftime, the Crusaders trailed 1-0 and had been outdone 8-5 in the shot column. UD would gain more opportunities in the second stanza with three of its four corner kicks, including one final opportunity in the closing 1:30 minutes. Junior Ben Mannings (Bath, England) blasted the corner ball and a senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas) was denied by Texas Lutheran Goalkeeper Jonathan Michael with a minute remaining.

Allen placed both of his two shot attempts on target and was among a trio of Crusaders to post multi-shot games. Sophomore Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) also went two-of-two in shots on goal, while junior Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas) rounded out the unit with two shots and one on goal.

Also logging shots for Dallas included: freshmen Sean Taylor (Austin, Texas) and Bryan Mora (Tomball, Texas), junior Stephen Gahan, Mannings, and sophomores Joseph Quiray (Sugar Land, Texas) and A.J. Zaugg (Dallas, Texas).

Saddled with the tough setback was junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas), who allowed the one goal and picked up four saves in a complete 90 minutes. The blemish ended a span of 205:79 minutes the keeper had not allowed the opposition to score.

Colin Nunley notched a game-high five shots and tied a team-high with two on goal. Lopez punched both his attempts on target including the game-winner. Fabian Linares kicked the other shot on goal and had a multiple shot night with two attempts.

Michael earned the win, stopping six saves to keep the visitors from tallying the equalizer. Four of his blocks came in the second half.

Texas Lutheran matched corner kicks in both frames with four apiece to total eight in the 90 minute match. Overall, TLU was whistled for 15 fouls, including 11 in the opening half. Dallas was cautioned six times in the game.
