Men's Soccer Prevails in Overtime Sunday against Schreiner University

IRVING, Texas – Sunday afternoon featured another thrilling contest as the University of Dallas men's soccer team (3-3-1, 2-0-1 SCAC) slipped by Schreiner University (2-5-1, 0-3 SCAC) in overtime, 1-0. Dallas moved to 1-0-1 in extra regulation matches this fall, and are off to its best start during league play since joining the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) five years ago.

The Crusaders are also tied for first place in the conference with Colorado College after this weekend's final results.

It was the second consecutive 1-0 shutout victory for Dallas, and the players responsible for the scoring sequence were freshman Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) tapping the golden goal on an assist from junior Stephen Gahan (Vancouver, Wash.). The duo also teamed up in Friday's upset against No.1 Trinity University.

Ciancone has now scored two goals to move to second on the team, and Gahan added his second assist in back-to-back games. In Sunday's overtime, the play occurred after a free kick from sophomore Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) deflected off a Schreiner defender and set Gahan up for a powerful entry pass just outside the top of the box. The freshman tallied the game-winner by getting the final touch to go just inside the right side of the net.

Neither team was able to get on the board during both halves. Dallas tied a season-high 18 shots, but only landed three on target. This included 12 attempts by the Navy and White in the second half, but could not capitalize on the opportunities. Some tough breaks got the home team as junior Ben Mannings (Bath, England) and senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas) hit the crossbar on kicks in the first half and second half, respectively. Allen also would hit the post three minutes after the cross bar result at the 61:29 mark of the game.

The Crusaders also held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, while the Mountaineers committed 13 fouls to UD's six.

Junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) posted his second-straight shutout and worked his 11th in his career with UD. Gamueda (3-3-1) earned the win while garnering two saves between the posts in 92:35 minutes.

Three players for Dallas kicked four shots to tie a game-high. Within the trio included: Allen, Ciancone, and Mannings – all compiling individual season-bests with the totals. Freshman Thomas Struxness (Universal City, Texas) and junior Tommy Byrd (Mansfield, Texas) also tallied multi-shot efforts with a pair apiece.

Eddie Martinez led Schreiner with two of the team's six shot attempts and placed one on goal. Eric Batalia also notched a shot on goal with his attempt. Blake Lawson (1-4) was saddled with the loss in a complete game effort in the net. He picked up one save in the setback.
