Ciancone's Game-winner lifts Men's Soccer in Upset over No.1 Trinity University

IRVING, Texas – An incredible feat for the University of Dallas men's soccer team (2-3-1, 1-0-1 SCAC) occurred Friday afternoon, knocking off No. 1 Trinity University (5-1, 1-1 SCAC) by a final score of 1-0. The triumph marks the first time in program history that Dallas defeated the Tigers out of 11 meetings counting Friday's matchup. It is also the first time an SCAC school has defeated Trinity since 2013.

Both teams were unable to generate many offensive opportunities in the first half. Trinity was nearly even in shot attempts for both halves, outdoing the Crusaders 13-5 overall.

In the second half, UD mustered four shots and freshman Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) landed the lone shot on target for his first collegiate goal of his career. The midfielder's launched a powerful ball just out of the reach of Trinity's goalkeeper Chad Margotta that propelled Dallas in front 1-0 at the 80:53 minute mark.

Junior Stephen Gahan (Vancouver, Wash.) gave the assist on a solid pass from the far left side of the field to begin the scoring sequence.

The final 10 minutes displayed tough defense that was much of the headline for Dallas throughout the contest. Trinity did force 11 corner kicks compared to UD's two, but could not capitalize as the home squad turned away many attempts in the box.

Junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) worked his first complete 90-minute shutout and claimed his 10th to be a part of as the goalkeeper. Gamueda notched six saves overall, including four in the opening stanza. He moves to 2-3-1 this fall, and anchored a defense that earned the first shutout in 2015.

Also posting shots for the Crusaders included: sophomore Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) with two, freshman Thomas Struxness (Universal City, Texas), and senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas) with one apiece.

Two players kicked a game-high three shots each by Laurence Wyke and Christian Sakshaug for the Tigers. Todd Edwards added a multi-shot match with two. All of Wyke's attempts were on goal and Sakshaug placed two of his three on target.
