Men's Soccer Claims First win of 2015

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team (1-1) scored twice in the first half and was enough to earn the first victory of the season in a 2-1 result versus Whitman College (0-1) on Thursday evening.

Junior Barton Holdridge (Fort Worth, Texas), who paced Dallas with a team-high three shots tonight, connected on a header 1:42 minutes into the contest to lift the home squad in front for good. Sophomore Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) tallied his first assist and point on the year with a corner kick to begin the sequence.

Dallas would attempt four of its five corner kicks in the opening stanza and limited the Missionaries to one overall.

The Crusaders maintained possession of the ball most of the first half, holding a 9-4 shot margin at halftime. UD would double its edge on a goal from junior Ben Mannings (Bath, England) at the 33:27 minute mark. The assist came from sophomore A.J. Zaugg (Dallas, Texas), who crossed from just outside the box on the left side. Mannings completed his first scoring play this season with the final touch crossing the lower left side of the net.

Overall, Dallas doubled the advantage in shot attempts 18-9, and shots on goal, 8-4. The Crusaders would total nine shot attempts in each half. 10 players for UD got involved in the shot category. Behind Holdridge's game-high, six Crusaders notched multi-shot goals. This included: senior Colton Allen (Roanoke, Texas), freshman Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas), sophomore Trae Hampton (Paducha, Ky.), sophomore John Langsfeld (Albuquerque, N.M.), Schwarz, and Zaugg.

Junior Tino Gamueda (Lubbock, Texas) got credited with the win after working 90 minutes in goal for Dallas. A shutout bid was ended at the 89:40 minute, when Whitman College's Noah Cavanaugh posted a goal off a penalty kick. The lone blemish in the final 60 seconds was all Gamueda allowed to go along with three saves – all in the first half.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was also present for tonight's triumph, as the third annual SCAC8-8 kicked off Thursday at the University of Dallas. For clips of coverage posted on the SCAC Instagram page, click here.
