Crusaders enjoy Senior Day with Strong Performances

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team celebrated "Senior Day" with a 24-3 victory over Hardin-Simmons University. The Crusaders picked up their third win at home against a MCLA opponent, as five players notched a hat trick. Austin Gibbons (St. Charles, Ill.) led the offense with 11 points. Seven of those came as assists, which broke the program's single-game record of six last held by Stephen Joseph against Centenary College (4/11/12).

Dallas (3-7) compiled 15 assists total to set a new record in that team category. The previous most was 14 in the program's inaugural campaign in 2011 (Marymount College). The Crusaders also boasted a program-high 39 points.

Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) put the home team on top at 12:55 in the game. Gibbons provided his first assist of his best performance on the year.

After Niko Pumas scored an equalizer about a minute later for the Cowboys (1-5), it was all UD the remainder of the first quarter. Eight goals lifted the Crusaders to a 9-1 advantage. Ben Blessard (Falls Church, Va.) netted the first goal that was part of the run. Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) Smith, and Gibbons added a pair of goals during that run. Smith eventually did finish with a game-high of five and had been the first to notch a hat trick with 3:48 left.

Joshua McClendon (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was another senior that netted a goal, as he led off the second quarter seconds in with his first on the match. Jameson had a man-up goal to give him a hat trick and capped 10 straight goals by Dallas.

HSU's Dallas Broekhuizen countered with a man-up goal of his own to snap the scoring streak for the Crusaders.

Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas), Joseph Kilmer (Rockville, Md.), and Gibbons completed the scoring for a 14-2 halftime lead. Gibbons had the third UD hat trick at that juncture and also was at seven points thanks to four helpers.

Dallas scored five goals in the last three quarters. Frederick started things in the third with Smith garnering his lone assist of the day. Frederick then found Gibbons for a man-up goal. McClendon dished assists on back-to-back goals to Smith and Jameson. Blessard secured the team's last hat trick to form the quintet by scoring three of the next four times. Gibbons assisted three more times to surpass the program mark. Bogar Trout III (Tecumseh, Mich.) put in a goal late in the fourth for his first goal of the campaign. It gives him five for his career, with his other four coming in 2017.

Dallas notched a season-high 63 shots, with 45 shots on cage to match its most total from the season opener versus University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The team also collected a season-high 60 ground balls. Blessard led with personal-best 10 ground balls. McClendon contributed eight, while Dan McCrorey (Reno, Nev.) and Kilmer added six apiece.

Smith totaled five goals to increase his career record to 66. His six points improved his individual program record to 86.

Blessard, Will McEvoy (Rockwall, Texas), Smith, and McClendon were recognized prior to the match for Senior Day.
