Men's Lacrosse fell to Southwestern on Saturday
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team concluded the 2018 season with a 20-7 setback to Southwestern University on Saturday. The Pirates scored six of the first eight goals to help create an 8-3 lead at halftime. Nine goals in the third quarter extended the margin to a beyond containable amount for the Crusaders.
After Jared Welsh scored four minutes in to give Southwestern the lead, the Crusaders responded with an equalizer from Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) two minutes later. The rest of the first stanza belonged to the guests, as four goals closed the opening 15 minutes. Zac Asbury buried two of the goals and Welsh added his second in under a minute until the first horn during that stretch.
Jameson would score on a man-up early in the second quarter to bring the gap down to three. The freshman secured his fifth hat trick of the season with 2:23 left to close the deficit down to 7-3. Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas) dished his team-leading 13th assist.
10 unanswered goals propelled the Pirates forward, with the first nine in the new half. J.P. Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) tallied a goal to give the newcomer a point in all 13 matches. He scored a goal in 12 straight matches after coming up without one in his debut.
Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) and Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) posted the last goals for UD in the fourth. Early scored on a man-up opportunity to finish the campaign with an all-time lead of 76 points in the school records. Smith secured his personal-best 29th goal for the team-high in that category. Smith also contributed an assist for 10 on his career season. Smith finishes his second full season with 60 points.
Christian Lopez (Las Vegas, Nev.) racked up 17 saves to match his second highest total this year.
Southwestern carried an advantage in about all the categories. The Crusaders were outdone 45-21 in shot attempts, and 53-24 in groundballs. Kai Knight-Turcan and Zach Asbury both tagged four goals apiece. Welsh added a hat trick and also delivered a pair of assists.
Kyle Kuberski made four saves in 43:20 minutes for the Pirates.
With a 6-7 overall record, UD and second-year head coach Sam Ashton took the program to an unprecedented amount of total wins and wins in NCAA Division III.
Prior to the match, lone senior Toby Zanini (Boston, Mass.) was recognized in his final game with the program. An expected four-year letterwinner, Zanini holds the all-time games played record with 62.
