Crusaders defeat Carroll on Thursday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team rolled to a 12-4 victory on Thursday afternoon at home over Carroll University. Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) and Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) each tallied four goals to support the offense, which had gone up 8-1 at halftime.

Carroll was able to reduce the gap to six in the next two quarters, but overall the defense for UD kept the distance manageable the remainder of the game. The win for the Crusaders ties a season record for the young program. In seven seasons, the 2015 team is the other program to have won this total.

A little over a minute into the game, Smith found the back of the cage to put the team on top. J.P. Hasson then bounced a shot into the netting at 10:05 for the second goal, and Smith gave the assist on that. The team leader this season in points bolstered that total with a game-high five.

It remained close the next seven minutes, but two quick scores by Jameson and Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) doubled the margin.

Airik Ranjo broke through with under a minute and a half to stop the run.

The Crusaders put four more goals up in the second quarter. Jameson, Smith, and Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) were responsible for the first three. This included a man-up goal by Smith at 7:36, and man-down score by Early with 1:22. Hasson claimed his fifth multi-scoring game of the spring as he created a play in the last ticks of the stanza.

It was more than enough goals that day. Smith would secure a hat trick with the team's lone goal in the third. Joshua McClendon (Redondo Beach, Calif.) dished the team's other assist of the match on that sequence.

Smith completed his scoring moments into the last quarter. Jameson finalized the goals with a pair within the last four minutes to match Smith for a game-high. It also tied a personal-best for the freshman, as he led with eight shots and placed six on target. Smith added seven attempts and five on cage.

Dallas finished with its second highest total of groundballs on the year with 38. Jameson matched Jonah Torres-Swanson (Austin, Texas) with a game-high five. Bogar Trout III (Tecumseh, Mich.) added four. Alex Graham (League City, Texas) forced three caused turnovers. Christian Lopez made 10 saves against 14 shots faced.

The Crusaders were 34-of-39 in successful clears. This was the fifth match the team has won at least 10 faceoffs. UD is 4-1 in such games.

Carroll was led by Ranjo with two goals. Michael Peters and Dylan Steichen recorded the other scoring plays. Abe Escarda made 11 saves in 58:12 minutes. He was forced out on a penalty in the second quarter.

Penalty totals were low today with a pair called on both sides, and only 3 minutes and 30 seconds accumulated altogether.
