Men's Lacrosse Concludes Home Stretch with Setback to Alfred University

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team was unable to keep up with a strong Alfred University opponent in a 20-8 decision on Friday evening to conclude the three-game home stretch. Dallas trailed 9-2 at halftime, and the visitors were able to match that total in a single quarter to push on ahead.

The past two contests were dropped by the Crusaders, moving them to 3-3 overall. Alfred improved to 4-1 and swept its two matches down in Texas, with the previous win coming at Southwestern University earlier in the week.

After falling behind by two goals, UD's Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas) got his team on the board with 7:39 left in the opening frame. The Saxons countered with another pair of goals – both happening in the last four minutes - before Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) found a man-up goal with eight seconds before the first break.

There happened to be two goals in the final 10 seconds of the first, as David LaSpina picked up the groundball on the Alfred faceoff win and as able to assist Frank Gavigan on a last second goal as time expired.

The Saxons posted four goals in the next quarter, while holding Dallas scoreless. They would end up counting seven unanswered goals, until J.P. Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) rattled in an early goal at 13:49 in the third.

Hasson, Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.), Jameson, and Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) tallied a goal in the Crusaders highest scoring quarter of the match, but Alfred's lead continued to balloon.

Hasson, Jameson, and Smith each had two-goal games overall, while Hasson claimed a team-high three points thanks to an assist on Jameson's third period goal. Christian Lopez (Las Vegas, Nev.) garnered 19 saves to best his previous season-best in the last outing versus Hendrix College (Mar. 3) by two. Lopez also picked up a team-high six groundballs. Tommy Chadwick (Tampa, Fla.) contributed three groundballs and two caused turnovers, while Bogar Trout III (Tecumesh, Mich.) tallied two in both columns.

34 players made an appearance for the Saxons including four goalkeepers. Chris Doktor (1-0) made the start and player the first 30 minutes of the game, before allowing three other keepers to finish the remainder of the match.

10 different players found the back of the cage, with Joe Fornataro netting a game-high four goals. Kyle Landrigan followed with three, and then Jake McNaney, Gavigan, and Landrigan completed the trio of players with multiple scores with two apiece.

Alfred dominated in the shot (57-26) and groundball (47-29) columns. The Crusaders did hold a 13-7 shots advantage in the fourth quarter, after being outdone by 20 (34-4) through intermission. Alfred also did well in the faceoff circle by going 25-for-31, including a 12-14 in the third stanza. Both teams had 27 successful clears.
