Men's Lacrosse drops Pair in USCAA Classic
CANTON, N.Y. – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team competed in the first United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Classic for the sport this past weekend. Two setbacks for the Crusaders resulted from the trip to SUNY Canton's campus.
On Saturday, Dallas (3-14) fell to Alfred State University 17-1. With SUNY Delhi dropping the earlier match, the two squads met Sunday morning with UD concluding the spring in a 16-0 final.
RECAP FROM ALFRED STATE
The Crusaders allowed an eight-goal, second quarter to give Alfred State (4-10) a 10-0 advantage into halftime. The Pioneers made it 12 unanswered before UD's freshman Ryan Thie (Saint Paul, Minn.) netted his eighth goal of the season. That was all the offense mustered, as ASU remained with the momentum to close out a win to face SUNY Canton the next day.
It was a scoreless match throughout most of the opening quarter. Dominic Coon broke the knotted tie at the 5:32 mark. Joe Johnson found the back of the cage on the next two goals for the Pioneers. His first of the contest doubled the edge with a minute and a half out until the first break. 75 seconds into the second quarter was his next one. Aaron Buck had assisted all three of ASU's netters for a trio of points. He finally tallied a goal with the team's fourth of the game.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Seniors Matthew Cyr (St. Louis, Mo.) and Alex Ziolkowski (Ann Arbor, Mich.) led the team in shots with eight and seven, respectively. Freshman Peter Early fired six.
- Thie placed two of his three attempts on cage, including UD's lone goal.
- Dallas was outshot 59-32 and 41-18 in shots hitting the cage.
- Ziolkowski won 14 faceoffs, which tied a season-most and is one away from the most in his career.
- Freshman Jonah Torres-Swanson (Austin, Texas) collected an individual team-most, 12 groundballs. Alfred State edged UD narrowly 47-40 overall in the category.
- Senior Ryan Murphy (Yorba Linda, Calif.) logged 21 saves against 36 shots faced. That gives him four straight games with at least 20 stops.
- Buck and Johnson each led the Pioneers with five goals. Buck's 10 assists landed him 15 points to lead all players. The high scoring tandem combined for 29 shots with 15 and 14, respectively.
- Coon earned the other hat trick with three.
- Ryan Amidon nabbed 17 saves against 18 shots faced in his fourth victory.
RECAP FROM SUNY DELHI
Playing an early morning tilt for the second straight weekend, Dallas could not halt a fast scoring SUNY Delhi (6-8) team, falling by 16. Half of those goals occurred in the first quarter. That 15-minute span featured a 6-0 run by the 8:44 mark, as the Broncos had plenty of support en route to a shutout.
Rob Pasquale and Anthony Vicario netted a pair of goals apiece in the span. Dallas contained SUNY Delhi the rest of the way to no more than three scoring results. The Crusaders were unable to find the back of the net, however.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Dallas was outshot 52-20 and 33-9 in shots on cage.
- The team's 46 groundballs ranked third highest this season and was the fourth time (consecutive games) for UD to eclipse 40. Torres-Swanson had 10 for back-to-back double figure games in that column. Also first two games to achieve that in his rookie campaign.
- The Crusaders also won the faceoff battle for the second day in a row.
- Ziolkowski was 11-for-19, as the team went 12-for-20. He won a double-digit amount of faceoffs in three of his last four games of his career, and closes out the program-record with 244 in two full seasons as the specialist.
- Ziolkowski also added eight groundballs, six shots, and four shots on cage.
- Murphy collected 17 saves.
- Both team's managed 35 clear attempts. The Broncos were successful 29 times compared to UD's 16.
- 10 players tallied a mark in the goals column, as SUNY Delhi spread the ball around. Vicario paced the team with a three-goal hat trick and five points.
- Jeremy Leary dished a trio of assists and contributed four points. Jack Bochicchio garnered a team-high seven groundballs.
- John Russo went the distance in the shutout, grabbing nine saves between the pipes.
