Cyr and Ziolkowski hat tricks lift Men's Lacrosse at Carroll Saturday

WAUKESHA, Wis. - For the third time this spring, the University of Dallas men's lacrosse team scored double figures. The team matched a season-high in goals, including a 7-1 second half performance to prevail 11-3 on Saturday at Carroll University. This margin marks the largest amount on the season.

Seniors Matthew Cyr (St. Louis, Mo.) and Alex Ziolkowski (Ann Arbor, Mich.) garnered hat tricks and the Crusaders won for the second time in the past four games. The victory improved Dallas to a 3-7 record, while the Pioneers fell in their season-opener. 

Cyr netted his first goal of the game with about two minutes out of the first faceoff. Carroll countered with a goal by Paul Kerchberger to even the scoreboard about four minutes later. The team's finished in a 2-all deadlock after one quarter. Freshman Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) increased his team lead in goals with his 15th (at the time) to post the other Dallas goal.

UD went on a 9-1 scoring run for the rest of the match. This included a four-goal fourth quarter. Ziolkowski captured his first goal of the season and the Crusaders never trailed the remainder of the contest. Early would dish the assist, his first of three in the game. Cyr notched his second goal to round out the scoring in the second quarter and carry a 4-2 edge at halftime.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE  

-UD goals: Cyr and Ziolkowski with three apiece. Early added two. Freshmen Ryan Thie (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Ben Blessard (Falls Church, Va.), and sophomore Joshua McClendon (Redondo Beach, Calif.) added one apiece.

- Ziolkowski notches his second hat trick since the Crusaders' last win versus Oglethorpe. Cyr claimed his third multi-scoring game with the season-high.

- Cyr tallied four assists to pace Dallas with a career-high seven points. Early matched a game-high four assists and finished with six points. 10 of UD's 11 goals had assists on the result.

- The Crusaders pounded the cage with a season-high 50 shots and placed 30 on target. A trio of players: Cyr (12), Early (11), and Ziolkowski (10) all had double-digit performances in that column. Cyr and Early led with eight shots on cage apiece.

- Dallas won the groundballs 48-30, led by Ziolkowski with a season-high of 11. Junior Jacob Tom (Waukesha, Wis.) had a nice day in his hometown, picking up seven groundballs and managed five of the team's 15 caused turnovers.

- The Crusaders won 11-of-18 faceoffs - all won by Ziolkowski - and both team's finished even on clears with 12.

- Carroll committed 33 turnovers and only attempted eight shots.

- The Pioneers did score three goals, with Kerchberger gaining two of them. He added an assist on Edward Weizenicker's goal to finish with three points.

- John Annand started and went 45 minutes in goal. He saved 14 attempts while facing 21 shots. Dakota Hawaii completed the final 15 minutes.
