Crusaders Golf and Montalvo Earn 2nd at Rhodes College Spring Classic

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The University of Dallas men's golf team finished competing in the Rhodes College Spring Classic on Monday, April 12. In the three-round tournament, the Crusaders ended in second place overall with a team score of 893. Dallas had the second best team score of the third round 291, finishing one stroke off the tournament winners, Webster University, who scored 290. Webster's final team score for all three rounds was 873.

LeTourneau University and Rhodes College who at the end of day one were one stroke and two strokes ahead of Dallas, fell off the pace and finished a full 10 strokes behind Dallas in the third round. LeTourneau placed third at 901 and Rhodes placed fourth at 902.

UD's Emilio Montalvo (Mexico City, Mexico) was the second place overall individual with a score of 214. Montalvo's three round score was his best three round tournament of the season, and his third best performance everin a three round tournament. The 2021 Rhodes Classic was the best tournament for Montalvo since he scored a record-setting 210 in the 2019 Rhodes Classic. Montalvo was tied for third amongst all golfers with 12 birdies for the tournament, and he was one of six golfers to score an eagle, which came in the third round. Montalvo was also the best golfer for the whole tournament on Par 4 holes, as he shot Even for all Par 4 holes.

Jacob Wade (Magnolia, Texas), Trey Schneider (Mooreville, N.C.) and Seth McNeil (Plano, Texas) all surged upward in the standing toward the end of the tournament.  All three golfers tied for 13th with scores of 227.  Wade and Schneider both tied for 7th with 34 pars made for the tournament, and McNeil and Robby Evans (Flower Mound, Texas) both tied for 11th with eight made birdies. Evans was also the best Crusader on Par 5 holes scoring a combined -5 on those holes.

The Rhodes College Spring Classic was the last regular season tournament of the year for the Crusaders.  On April 19 and 20, the Crusaders will travel to Blanco, Texas to compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship hosted at Vaaler Creek Golf Club.

Worthy of note:

In 2019 when the Crusaders won the SCAC Championship, the last tournament Dallas competed in preceding the Championship was the Rhodes Classic in which Montalvo shot under 215 and placed in the top five, the Crusaders finished in second as a team after trailing LeTourneau closely for the first two rounds and then UD traveled to Blanco, Texas and Vaaler Creek Golf Club to play in the SCAC Championship.
