Crusaders Top Schreiner in Hard Fought Win

January 26, 2024

IRVING, Texas. - The University of Dallas men's basketball team won their conference matchup against Schreiner University 98-89 on Friday, improving to 8-11 overall on the year and 5-6 in conference play.

The two sides were evenly matched right from tip-off.  Dallas enjoyed a narrow lead for much of the first half, though never led by more than six points.  The Mountaineers gained some steam near the end of the half and clung to a lead for about four minutes, hitting their best scoring run of eight points to go up by five with just under five minutes remaining.

Dallas answered back, matching that run with eight unanswered points of their own to reclaim the lead inside the final two minutes.  They took a 38-37 lead into halftime, having shot 41.7% from the field.  Schreiner had 16 field goals to Dallas' 15 in the first half, but the Crusaders had the edge from beyond the arc, going 3-of-11 from three while the Mountaineers were just 1-of-10.

The back and forth battle continued into the second half as both teams refused to budge.  With the game tied at 57-57 after nine and a half minutes, the Crusaders slowly, but surely began to build a lead and finally put some daylight between the two teams.  Over the next five and a half minutes, Dallas outscored the Mountaineers 21-9 to take a 12-point lead with just over six to play.

The Crusaders led by as many as 13 points, taking an eight-point lead into the final minute and forcing Schreiner to play the foul game.  Dallas sealed the win with an excellent performance from the free throw line, going 12-of-14 in the final 90 seconds alone and 19-of-22 in the second half.

Their 98 points on the night is the highest scoring game for the men's program since defeating Schreiner 98-87 on Feb. 6, 2021.

Jack Boyle led all players with three blocks, and led the team with 30 points and 19 rebounds.  Johny Olmsted scored 16 points, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.  Kelton Coleman provided 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench, and Thomas Fleming dropped 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
