Men's Basketball Falls in OT to Colorado

January 14, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's basketball lost their conference game against Colorado College 77-70 in overtime on Sunday, falling to 6-10 overall on the year and 3-5 in conference play.

Play was quite even for the entire first half, with seven lead changes and the game tied up six times in the first 20 minutes.  Neither team was able to string more than eight points together, and the biggest lead of the half belonged to Dallas at six points.

Even though they shot just 10% from beyond the arc (1-of-10), the Crusaders were lights out from just about everywhere else, going 16-of-31 (51.6%) from the field in the first half.  Much of that scoring was provided by Johny Olmsted and Jack Boyle, the pair combining for 32 points.

Olmsted was 4-of-5 from the field with 10 points, which led all players except for Boyle who dropped 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field.  They carried the Crusaders to a 40-34 advantage at the break.

Dallas played well to start the second half, extending their lead to 14 points after seven minutes while going 6-of-13 from the field.  But the Crusaders hit a painful cold streak, scoring just five points over the next 12 minutes as they allowed the Tigers to come all the way back and take a 66-60 lead.

Aaron Pizana sank a three-pointer to make it a one possession game with under 90 seconds left, then Thomas Fleming tied it up with a three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Unfortunately, the cold streak carried over into overtime instead of the momentum of the buzzer beater as the Crusaders went just 1-of-6 from the field in the overtime period.  Colorado steadily pulled away to seal the deal.

Boyle finished as the game's scoring leader with 26 points as well as leading all players with 10 rebounds for a double-double.  Olmsted finished with 12 points, and Jamal Leftwich added 10 points with five rebounds.
