Crusaders Topple Austin College, Boyle Becomes UD Block Leader

January 6, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's basketball won their conference game against Austin College 91-75 on Saturday, improving to 6-9 overall on the year and 3-4 in conference play.

Both teams got off to a bumpy start.  Austin was ice cold, making just two of their first 10 field goal attempts.  Dallas was 2-of-5 from the field in the same span, but also turned the ball over three times in the first four minutes.

The two sides settled in and matched each other blow for blow for much of the first half.  Hardly anything separated them going into halftime, but the biggest difference was the foul count.  The 'Roos racked up 15 fouls to Dallas' nine, sending the Crusaders to the line for 22 free throws in the first half alone.  Though they shot just 59% from the line, that was enough to give Dallas a four point edge going into the break.

The back and forth battle resumed in the second half, with four ties and two lead changes in the first four and a half minutes.  The Crusaders took the lead on a three-pointer by Zac Olmsted with 15:27 on the clock and held the lead for the rest of the game.

Dallas slowly, but surely built on their lead from there.  The Crusaders outscored the 'Roos 21-8 in the final five minutes to secure the win, leading by as many as 18 points.

After playing just a minute and a half in the first period, having racked up two fouls in quick succession, Kelton Coleman dropped 23 points in just under 14 minutes off the bench.  He went 9-of-14 from the field, 2-of-3 from three, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

Jack Boyle (pictured) etched his name in the UD history books tonight.  He recorded two blocks on the night to bring his career total to 132, surpassing Eric Creeger's total of 130 to become UD's career leader in blocks.  With six rebounds on the night, he is also just 17 away from breaking the career record of 779 held by Brandon Hartsell.

And he led all players on the night with 25 points for good measure.
