December 30, 2023

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas men's basketball team lost their conference game against Texas Lutheran 94-79 on Saturday, dropping to 5-9 overall on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Dallas shot nearly 50% from the field in the first half and were an excellent 4-of-10 from beyond the arc as well.  The Crusaders led by as many as 13 points in the period, but the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run in the final three minutes to cut the deficit to four by halftime.

Johny Olmsted was the hot hand, leading all players with 13 points in the first half going 3-of-5 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.

The first few minutes of the second half were evenly fought.  TLU fought back to tie the game up three times, but Dallas clung to a narrow advantage seven minutes in.  The Bulldogs took a 50-49 lead with just under 13 minutes to play and never relinquished it.  For about four minutes, the Crusaders were shut down almost completely, going just 1-of-5 from the field.  In the same span, TLU went 6-of-11 from the field, and suddenly the Bulldogs were up by 14 with eight and a half left to play.

Dallas was excellent in those final eight and a half minutes, going 8-of-15 (53%) from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.  Meanwhile, the Bulldogs shooters were ice cold, going just 4-of-13 from the field.  They managed to stay ahead thanks to their free throw shooting, as they went 19-of-21 from the line to close the game.

Ultimately, it came down to the performance from the line.  TLU had just one more field goal than Dallas, but went 31-of-37 from the line compared to 19-of-29 for the Crusaders.

Olmsted scored 23 points for the third time this season to lead all players in scoring on the night.

Kelton Coleman scored 12 points with six rebounds and five assists.

Jack Boyle notched a double-double with 13 points and 13 assists, cracking 1,000 points for his career in the process.
