Crusaders Season-High in Points Lead to Weekend Split at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas men's basketball team concluded their two game road trip against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Schreiner University on Saturday. Dallas earned a bounce back victory over the Mountaineers by the score of 98-87.

Dallas broke away from Schreiner early in the second half and never looked back.  The Crusaders led by as many as 13 in the second half and held Schreiner at arm's length the rest of the way, never allowing the Mountaineers to get closer than six points.

Both teams shot well for the game with Schreiner holding a slight edge over Dallas 49.3% from the field to 48.5%.  UD, however, also shot red hot from beyond the arc shooting 43.8% from 3-point range.

Six different Crusaders, including all five starters scored 10 or more points in the game.  Jacob Giunta (Keller, Texas) led the charge with 23 points on 7-14 shooting, 2-2 from the 3-point line, and 7-10 from the foul line.  Letrell Toussaint (Waco, Texas) scored 14 points in the game and, along with Giunta, recorded a double-double.

Jacob Boyle's double-double streak was snapped at three games as he scored 16 points with seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

UD's trio of guards, Dustin Mathis (Ft. Worth, Texas), Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas), and Jai Love (St. Louis Missouri) scored 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively.

Schreiner's Alex Dehoyos scored 20 points and a game high seven assists. Nicholas Vann, DaRyan Williams, and Matthew Rindahl each scored in double digits with 17, 16, and 14 points.

Dallas struck first in the game with a layup by Toussaint.  After a pair of baskets by Dehoyos, UD went on to take a 14-9 lead.  After Schreiner tied the game at 17-17, the lead traded hands several times until UD finally took a 42-40 just before halftime.  The Crusader would go into halftime ahead 46-40.

After a basket by both teams, Dallas went on to take their first double digit lead, 55-44, with 17:02 in the half off of a 3-pointer by Mathis.  UD went on to increase their lead to its largest point at 72-59 with 11:27 to go after Toussaint hit a pair of free throws.  Schreiner whittled Dallas' lead to six points at 79-73 and then again at 83-77 after Williams hit a layup just before the under four media timeout.  That would be the closest Schreiner would get as Toussaint, Hyde, Giunta, and Love each hit big free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

The win improves the Crusaders to 2-6 for both their season record and conference record, while the loss drops Schreiner's season record to 2-4 and their conference record to 1-3. Dallas comes back to Irving for their final home games of the season against Southwestern University.  Game times will be at 8 p.m. on Friday Feb. 12 and 4 p.m. Saturday Feb. 13.
