Crusaders Men's Basketball Comes Up Short on Friday to Centenary, 76-73

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's basketball team began their two game home series against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Centenary College of Louisiana this weekend. Dallas lost the opening game of the series to Centenary in a failed comeback bid, 76-73.

The two teams played an even game for the first 14 minutes until Centenary went on a 17-8 run to end the 1st half 43-34.  After reaching their largest deficit of the game at 54-42, the Crusaders slowly clawed their way to tie the game at 73-73 with 2:20 left in regulation.  Centenary's Tykeem Singleton hit a three pointer with 1:44 left and finished the scoring for the game.  Dallas missed their final two opportunities to tie the game at 21 seconds and six seconds left in the game by Jai Love (St. Louis, Mo.) and Marcus Juarez (Clint, Texas).

The Crusaders were given an unexpected boost tonight by Freshman forward Jack Boyle (Silver Spring, Md.) who had the best game of his young college career.  In his first start, Boyle scored 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked six shots and swiped two steals as well as influencing many other shots and stifling opposing post players in the paint.  Prior to tonight's game, Boyle's highest marks in points, rebounds, and blocks were four, seven, and one.  Boyle's six blocked shots are the most blocks in a game by a Crusader since Spencer Levi set the school record against Johnson & Wales University in 2017 with nine.

Centenary started the game with the first basket off a layup by Singleton.  Dallas then jumped out in front 12-5.  Dallas held the lead until Centenary tied the game at 23-23.  After the Gents briefly took the lead, Dallas tied the game on a three pointer by Juarez 26-26.  Centenary then went on to take the lead eventually reaching double digits early in the 2nd half at 44-34.  The game was played evenly until Dallas started gradually making their comeback around the 10 minute mark.  UD's effort culminated in a game tying layup by Boyle with just over two minutes to go.  The game finally ended with Centenary winning 76-73.

Love and Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, TX) contributed double digit games for Dallas.  Love scored 18 points on 6-11 shooting, 4-6 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 from the free throw line.  Hyde scored 13 points on 3-11 from the floor, 0-4 from the 3-point line, 7-8 from the foul line.  Dustin Mathis (Ft. Worth, TX) had a good game distributing the ball with seven assists.

The Gents had big bench performances from Kile Mingo and AJ Hall who scored 20 points and 11 points, respectively.  Centenary starters Seth Thomas and Drew Young also scored in double digits with 11 and 10 points.

Dallas will conclude their four game homestand on Saturday against Centenary.  The rematch will take place Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
