Crusaders Unable to Hold with Hot Second Half Shooting from TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team fell to Texas Lutheran University on Friday evening by a score of 75-62. The Crusaders (8-6, 4-3 SCAC) grabbed a 31-29 advantage after 20 minutes of play but was later outscored 46-31 in the second half after Jamir Mason and Sebastian Andrade both notched 18 points on the night and had two other Bulldog teammates secure double-digits. Texas Lutheran (10-5, 7-1 SCAC) shot above 40% from the field and behind the arc in the winning effort.

Dallas jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Mason and Caleb Lister tied the game up at six with two three-pointers. For the next three minutes UD went on an 8-2 lead, but Lister later tied the game up at 16 after two more three-pointers at the 10:40 mark. Successful free throw attempts allowed TLU to go up 21-19, but John Russell (Bossier City, La.) drew the Crusaders even with his jump shots. With two minutes to play in the first half Jacob Ginuta (Keller, Texas) hit a key shot to give UD a 29-24 lead, but Lister later tied the game up once again giving the Bulldogs momentum. Letrell Toussaint (Waco, Texas) threw down a dunk at the 1:29 mark to give UD the lead back (31-29) and this would end up being the halftime score after both teams missed opportunities down the stretch.

UD gave up the lead early in the second half, but Russell hit a jumper to tie up the ball game at 34 a piece. After the Crusaders fell behind by six, Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) heated up to allow UD to come back to tie the game at 42 with 12:48 to play. TLU kept hitting shots, but UD stayed close with key three-pointers to keep the game from getting out of hand. Mason pushed the Bulldogs lead to 10 with six minutes and 45 seconds remaining, but Dallas would get on a roll to pull closer. An 8-1 Crusaders run made it a 61-58 game. Lister and Mason drained big shots at this point to expand the TLU lead and put Dallas in a tough situation. Andrade then added to the mix late, to allow the Bulldogs to gain the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) victory.

Wambsganss paced Dallas with 15 points and seven rebounds drilling four three-pointers. Dustin Mathis (Fort Worth, Texas) notched 12 points with three treys, while Jai Love (St, Louis, Mo.) and Russell both added 10 points. Russell garnered nine boards to match a game-high. Love and Jacob Giunta (Keller, Texas) each dished four assists.

Behind the efforts of Andrade and Mason, Lister added 15 points and nine rebounds, as Jordan Kite secured 12 points for TLU. The Bulldogs won the rebound margin by a narrow margin of 38-36 and shot 76.2% from the free throw line.

Both teams had 13 assists. It was the first road game this season that UD reached double-digits for made treys with 10.
