Men's Basketball falls in Season-Opener at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Dallas men's basketball team (0-1) rallied late in the second half on Sunday afternoon at Hendrix College (1-0), but would be topped 88-79. The Crusaders were forced into 18 turnovers, which led to 19 points for the home team. Dallas would cause 14 but only etched 10 points from the HC miscues.

It was a back-and-forth contest in the early going as Preston Smith's three-pointer opened things out of the tip. The Crusaders quickly tied things and took their first lead on back-to-back field goals from junior Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas). His latter shot was a trifecta. UD narrowly led in the first six minutes, with no more than a five-point edge.

After Sophomore Emmanuel Calton's (Keller, Texas) pair of free throws lifted Dallas 20-17, Hendrix's Maxwell Vrana sank a trey to erase the road squad's final lead of the game. The Warriors would use a 9-0 run to push a six point edge capped on another trey – this time from Travis Garrett. Hendrix led 36-32 at intermission.

The majority of the second stanza was controlled by the Orange and Black, extending the advantage to as many as 11 points. The Crusaders held tough and would rally with under three minutes to cut the deficit to as close as 80-75.

Aaron Steele capitalized on a jumper to push the lead back to seven, and after a layup from sophomore Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas), Hendrix made six-of-eight free throws to seal their first win of the campaign.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • A quartet of Crusaders broke double figures in scoring led by Sarrat with 17 points. Gonzalez followed behind with 16. Junior Tom Kaiser (Nashville, Tenn.) and freshman Prince Giadolor (Rockwall, Texas) joined the group with 12 and 11, respectively.
  • Gonzalez (11), Giadolor (11), and Kaiser (10) all scored double-digits in the second half.
  • Kaiser was one rebound shy of a double-double with game-high of nine. Sophomore Rory MacCallum (Golden, Colo.) pulled down seven. UD out-rebounded the Warriors 42-34.
  • Hendrix shot 50 percent from the field and a 45.5-clip from beyond the arc. The Crusaders posted a 40.4 shooting percentage from the floor, and were 2-of-17 from downtown.
  • The Warriors were led by Smith with 16 points. Steele contributed 14 points and Bryce Batchelor added 11.

WORD FROM COACH

"The game was physical and Hendrix shot the ball extremely well. They are well coached and their guys made shots. We also did not take care of the basketball (referring to 18 turnovers), and that put us in a hole. We have to make better decisions while trying to execute our offense." – Postgame remarks from Head Coach Jarred Samples
